Call for Entries: Sydney Quilt Show 2018

Entries for the Sydney Quilt Show 2018 are now open! Jump online to view/download these key documents:

The closing date for entries is 11.59pm Monday 12 March 2018.

We encourage you to use the ONLINE ENTRY FORM as it streamlines the payment and data collection process and allows our volunteers to better administer entries. Pay by credit card through our secure ANZ portal and you’ll receive immediate email confirmation of your entry on payment. To help your use of this form, we've modified the secure payment process so if you had any problems in 2017, we have hopefully fixed them.

Use the Worksheet to plan your online entry. Please only submit the worksheet as a paper entry form if you do not have access to the online entry and payment process.  Remember to clearly nominate your preferred entry as Quilt #1 as priority will be given to first choice quilts if needed (see Conditions 1-5).

Prepare your entry early so that you know that it will be received by the closing date Monday 12 March 2018
To conserve resources, the entry form package will NOT be distributed in the February issue of The Template. You may contact the QuiltNSW office and request that a paper copy be mailed to you.

Quilt Study Group 2018: Talk by Deborah Louie

The first 2018 Quilt Study Group of NSW meeting will take place on the 10th of February at The Glover Cottages, 124 Kent Street in Millers Point. Deborah Louie will talk about the new directions her quilting career has taken. Many of us have taken her classes in beginner and free-motion quilting in the past and know about her sponsorship by Bernina sewing machines, but now Deborah is using a new teaching technique fit for today’s busy world.

After an overview of her method of teaching machine quilting, Deborah will talk about the new quilt patterns she teaches and why she decided to change things all around and move into the cyber teaching world. We will hear about the logistics of running online classes - how and what she does.
Deborah will of course have plenty of quilts and images to illustrate her talk.

Please encourage everyone you know who is interested in quilting to come along to the Quilt Study Group of NSW talks. The Glover Cottages is a beautiful light-filled venue for the talks and it is an easy walk through The Rocks area from either Wynyard or Circular Quay train stations. Quilt NSW guild members pay $5, non-guild members pay $10. Afternoon tea is provided and the talks start at 2pm. Check the Quilt NSW website or the latest Template Newsletters for more details.

Friday Showcase - 2 February 2018 with Kay Murray

Kay Murray with her prize-winning quilt "The Circle Game" (pattern by Jen Kingwell)
Kay Murray is the guest presenter for our February Friday Showcase, which is on this Friday 2 February.

From her early years on a Merino sheep property in rural NSW, to a secondary school teacher specialising in textiles, long arm quilter and award winning quilter, Kay would seem to have lived a life surrounded by textiles.

Kay describes herself as 'a bit of a dabbler’ in quilting styles, enjoying traditional and modern quilts, scrappy and art quilts and admits to most often making scrappy quilts in a vain attempt to use her ever-growing stash.  A member of ATASDA, Kay incorporates hand dyeing and surface design in her art quilts and other items, quilting with a ‘grafitti’ style to produce stunning quilts with unique appeal.

Friday Showcase is held most months at our QuiltNSW office, 276 Pitt Street, Sydney, close to Town Hall Station. The presentation starts at 10am, with an entrance fee of $5 for members or $10 for guests.

The Australian Quilt at Manning Regional Art Gallery

Manning Regional Art Gallery currently has a quilt exhibition on display featuring a number of QuiltNSW's Colours of Australia quilts, including those made by current members Judy Hooworth, Anna Brown, Val Nadin and Eileen Campbell. The exhibition also includes quilts from some Manning Valley quilt artists, including Jan Irvine-Neale.

Here are some photos of the exhibition. It is wonderful to hear that the exhibition has been very well attended and has received positive praise. It's not too late to plan a trip to visit the exhibition as it runs until 26 November 2017.

Manning Regional Art Gallery is located at 12 Macquarie St, Taree and is open Wednesday to Sunday (Wed to Sat, 10 am - 4 pm and Sun, 1pm - 4 pm).

Quilt Study Group 2017: Talk by Linda Butcher

Our last event for the year will be a talk at The Glover Cottages on Saturday the 11th of November. Since coverlets have appeared for the first time in the Sydney Quilt Show, we have asked noted quilt teacher and maker of coverlets, Linda Butcher, to talk to us about the history of this popular bed and wall covering and to show us examples of her work.

Linda won a First Prize at the 2017 Sydney Quilt Show for her wonderful coverlet, 'By Night and By Day', and will bring it along to her talk. She is hoping to have some other teachers' coverlets to show us as well so it should make for a great afternoon.

Please bring along your own coverlets for show and tell – especially any that you have entered into quilt shows. There will be some other famous coverlets to see up close, including this Mary Jane Hannaford coverlet.

Friday Showcase - 3 November 2017: Member Show and Tell

Friday 3rd November will be our final Friday Showcase for 2017.  It’s always a fun conclusion for our year, with all members invited to bring along a finished quilt or work in progress to “Show and Tell”.

Prepare for animated discussion, a sharing of ideas and one of Elaine’s brownies with a coffee or tea.  Or take the opportunity to borrow from our extensive library whilst there!

We look forward to your company and the pleasure of viewing the variety of projects and techniques our members continue to delight and encourage each other to try.

Hoping to see you at 10am at our usual venue, our city office at 278 Pitt Street, Sydney. Members and guests welcome.

Friday Showcase will resume in February 2018, with a presentation by Kaye Murray.
