QSG Report: Katrina Hadjimichael's Presentation

Katrina Hadjimichael spoke to fifty interested people at her talk for the Quilt Study Group of NSW at the Powerhouse Museum on the 17th March 2012. She told us about her background – studying archaeology at Sydney University and working as a research assistant for a variety of politicians over 15 years. Even though her mother and grandmother did needlework  (embroidery, knitting, crotchet, cross stitch, tapestry and later patchwork) Katrina hated sewing at school and only got hooked on quilting when she bought a small wall hanging kit in 1992. Her first quilts had a country look

She started teaching when one of her local patchwork shop owners noticed her work. From 2006 teaching her own quilt designs has become her full time income.

‘My main interest now focuses on reproduction fabrics from the second half of the nineteenth century and I make quilts that (hopefully) look old.  I am in the process of collecting a library of books dedicated to quilt history and I love to surf the net reading about others who work in this genre.  There are now quite a few websites of Museums and Quilt Study Groups which publish photographs of antique quilts.  Antique quilt dealers are also a good source of visual stimulus for antique designs.  A lot of quilters, including myself, are writing their own blogs to keep the public up to date on their latest endeavours’.

Katrina then took us though the detail of each of her quilts along with images of the quilts that inspired her. Here is the first one -

‘That photograph of that quilt haunted my thoughts for a long time!  I had to make my own interpretation of it….This quilt has been the subject of an article in The Journal of the British Quilt Study Group, Issue 10, 2009.  The article by Bridget Long called “Sibling, Cousin or Friend?” compares the coverlet that I loved from the British Quilt Heritage Project with another very similar fragmentary coverlet now in a private collection in the United Kingdom’.

And the quilt she made was ‘Pemberley’. It is an interpretation of an old quilt, but designed with more symmetry in the components, simplified borders and a different centre to the original.

Because she loves English Frame quilts so much, Katrina then continued the Jane Austen series by working several of her favourite shapes into the framework of borders on her ‘Netherfield’ quilt.

Katrina described in detail the process she followed to come up with the final design and inspired fabric choice for this quilt.

The third in the series, ‘Longbourne’, went through the same process of design and fabric selection. It was inspired by Elizabethan crewel wool embroidery centres and Lucy Boston’s favourite shapes used for paper piecing.

We were privileged to see the fourth in the series, ‘Rosings’, which has just been on show with the three earlier quilts in the series. They were displayed this month in Melbourne at the Australasian Quilt Convention and it ‘Rosings’ is Katrina’s entry in the Sydney Quilt Show this year.

She reminded us that there are 3 other houses mentioned in Jane Austen’s books if she wants to continue with her ‘obsession’! To finish we saw eight of Katrina’s other quilts that show her continued love of reproduction fabrics. And she had also brought along some of her students’ quilts for us to admire and examine.

Merelyn is an outstanding recipient of this prestigious award and all Guild Members will be thrilled for her. Not only is she extremely talented, but also graciously devoted several hours as a 'white glove lady' on Saturday, answering the many questions that viewing this amazing quilt provokes. Pearls of Wisdom

Did your Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, other relative or friend teach you her sewing skills?
Perhaps you remember a certain wonderful wise mantra of theirs, or maybe the advice of an early Quilting Teacher still rings in your head, each time you sit down to create.

"Use Your Empty Time"....this gem of information, written in a 1991 Lady's Circle Patchwork Quilts, still resonates.
It referred to having a "pick up and go bag" of pre-prepared handwork, thus turning those Dr's Waiting Room periods into patchwork time. Then there are the hours that soon add up for Mum's at School Gates. There's also travelling time: work / holiday or visiting, and even at home "Empty Time" can be found, with snatches of productive moments being grabbed between other duties.
Using lengthier home quilting periods to prepare fabric and blocks, cutting out, threading needles, and updating the Grab Bag, will pay off ....... as you race out the door.

To celebrate The Guild's 30th Anniversary, a collection of wise words, hints and tips that you've discovered have been helpful on your quilting journey, will be collated and published.

Please send these helpful suggestions, with your name attached, to the Guild Office, or give them to Meg Orr at the General Meetings.
...Or...email.... meeting@quiltersguildnsw.com

We'd love to know your "Pearls"!

Bicentennial Banners Tour : 24 April 2012

Willoughby Council has recently upgraded their premises in Chatswood, allowing the Arts and Cultural Manager, Jacky Talbot, to showcase The Bicentennial Banners; textiles that were designed and created in 1988.

There are 14 visually stunning Banners, celebrating the History of Willoughby from its indigenous Guringai roots, through to the diverse community present in 1988.

Judy has devised a guided tour of these banners, recently extensively conserved by The International Conservation Service.

NSW Quilters' Guild members will once again delight in viewing the hard work of one of our long time members.

Textile Artist Yvonne Line led an industrious team of volunteers throughout two years of dedication to bring to textural life, the vibrant designs of Malcolm King.

These Bicentennial Banners are a supporting addition to the National Trust's Heritage Festival 14-26 April 2012.

The banners are on view permanently, however the Information Tour is scheduled only on Tuesday 24 April. Please book for this tour, to hear the history of The Bicentennial Banners and how restoration was undertaken.
Jacky Talbot would be delighted to hear from any of the original volunteers, or their families, who worked on this installation.

Traditional floral decorative embroidery patterns will be sourced as inspiration for a sampler, and Carolyn will assist students in exploring both traditional and contemporary avenues for their work.

Can you help?

The Guild has had the following enquiry from the Social History and Exhibitions Curator of Fairfield City Museum and Gallery. If you can help, please contact her direct.

Good morning,
I am wondering if you are able to help me with an enquiry we have about a quilt which is currently in our collection. We do not have any information about who made the quilt or when it was donated to the Museum so I was therefore wondering if someone in your organisation had either seen the quilt before or knew someone who made this particular type of quilt. We are hoping to track down either the owner or the person who donated it to the Museum.

I have attached a picture of the quilt.

Any assistance you can provide would be much appreciated, I realise this is very much a long shot!
Kind regards,

Helen Johnson

The jacket packs flat for travelling and provides those extra layers when the weather is cooler.

Day 1. Create the fabric for the jacket using quick piecing techniques.
Day 2. Assemble the jacket and perhaps wear it home.

Group Insurance

The Guild committee has successfully negotiated a new business insurance policy which will provide public liability insurance for financial Member Groups.

There is no change to the Group Membership fee ($88.00) and no change to the benefits applicable for Group membership.

The policy will give Member Groups public liability insurance for all group meetings, workshops and exhibitions. The policy also has a provision for insurance of quilts at exhibitions.

It is not compulsory for Member Groups to participate in this insurance but many groups will find this to be an inexpensive alternative to existing insurance options.

To participate in this policy a group is required to pay a capitation fee of $5.00 for each NON guild member of the group. Group members who are financial individual members of the Guild will not pay the capitation fee.

For further details please email Maree Gebhardt.

QSG Report: Jennifer Corkish Antique Quilt Inspiration

Jennifer Corkish is a noted quilt designer and teacher who lives in the Southern Highlands of NSW and who specialises in antique looking quilts. She spoke to us about her inspiration when designing quilts and the process she follows for reproducing antique quilts. She was accompanied by five of her students who showed us their quilts, completed and in progress, demonstrating the variety of modifications to her quilt patterns that can be made.
Jennifer (2nd on left) with her students
Jennifer told us that she looks at quilt auction and sale websites, museum collections, magazines, books, quilts brought along to Quilt Study Group meetings, private quilt collections and old embroideries to inspire her in designing her quilt patterns. She often takes ideas from different quilts to come up with a design that is modified in class to meet each of her students’ aims, sewing preferences and fabric choices.

Here are 3 students' variations of one of her designs  –
We were taken through a series of images of antique quilts, their source details, Jennifer’s designs inspired by those quilts, and then we were shown 2 to 3 examples of quilts made in her classes from her patterns. Jennifer carefully explained exactly how each pattern was created and then varied for each student. Many of her Australian quilt inspirations came from photographs in Dr. Annette Gero’s books (the Frederica Josephson quilt, the Roebuck quilt, the Sarah Evans quilt, Elizabeth Hardy’s 1840 quilt, Jessie Wilson’s 1870 Medallion with Heart quilt, Mary Tolman’s 1850s hexagon quilt), Jenny Manning’s book and Aunt Clara’s quilt from the Powerhouse Museum.

Her inspirations are many -  patterns on tiles, photographs of quilts in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Beamish Collection in the UK, and antique quilts she saw at Houston in USA. Jennifer said she prefers to use ordinary materials to design her quilt patterns – graph paper, propelling pencil, compass and protractor, but she has been known to use EQ7 and Photoshop software. Her final statement was apt: “I can’t imagine living without a needle and thread. That’s why I design, colour, stitch and teach others to do the same.”
Liz Bonner.

QSG Report: Trish Bloomfield on the Joys & Pitfalls of Collecting Old Quilts

Trish Bloomfield owns over 100 old quilts and quilt tops, most of which she has bought over the internet. She came along with a sample of them to show us and illustrate her talk on how to become a more discerning buyer of old quilts. She started by showing us some quilts that were made in China and represented as being antiques that she owns and uses as everyday quilts on her bed. She said she has seen brand new US$50-60 quilts on e-bay being bid up to US$500–600 so it was very good to hear this warning.

Trish gave us a number of hints for trying to make sure you pay the correct price for a quilt. She believes that firstly you must research quilts by reading as many quilt history books as possible and checking various websites on the internet before you commit to buying an old quilt. She recommended http://hartcottagequilts.com/archquilts as the major site to look at for recent commercially made reproduction quilts that have been sold on e-bay as old ones. The three photos above are examples of such quilts she has bought or been given. Also, by googling the block name used in a quilt you are interested in buying, you can see if there is a suspiciously large number of them for sale.
We learnt how she cares for her quilts and quilt tops and she explained how she keeps a numbered catalogue of all the quilts she buys. She transfers this information onto old doilies which she then sews on the back of the quilts. Examples are below –

Trish showed us some of her first purchases and some wonderful examples of how her taste in quilts has changed over time. Some great purchases included a whole cloth Mennonite wedding quilt that was advertised as being cotton, but turned out to be made of silk, a rare blue Marie Webster kit quilt, a Ruby McKim state flower quilt, a 1960s cross stitch kit quilt and a bright poly cotton 1960s Seven Sisters quilt. She finished her talk by showing us her latest purchases of a French bouti petticoat bought from a Swiss antique dealer’s website and two North England whole cloth quilts.
