QSG : Medallion Quilt Report

On Saturday the 21st of July, Margaret Sampson George spoke for the Quilt Study Group of NSW about Medallion or Frame Quilts. There were 68 in the audience in the Target Theatre at the Powerhouse Museum to hear Margaret Sampson George talk about her introduction to sewing and quilting, her love of medallion quilts and then to see examples of her work and those of her students.

Margaret discussed the historic reasons for the popularity of medallion quilts, the development of fabrics from the 1500s on (especially the quilt centres based on pastoral, floral, military or commemorative panels) and the importance of medallions for commemorating important dates in the makers’ lives.

For members of  The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc. there will be a lengthier report on this event and further photos in the next edition of The Template.

Block of The Quarter

The Template : May 2012, Page 36 includes instructions for the current Block of The Quarter

This is the very effective Spool block and, constructed as a 6 inch block with high contrast black-on-white print fabric plus red print fabric, will deliver a very dramatic quilt top for the lucky winner.

There is still time before Tuesday August 14 to send your self named blocks to the Guild Office if you cant attend the Burwood Guild meeting on August 18, where the winner of the draw will win all blocks submitted.

A great way to delve into your stash, producing blocks for a traditional masculine-looking quilt top (in time for Christmas!)

Quilt Show Divas

The quilters were finished,
their fingers, quite numb,
Judges had judged
and quilts were now hung.

A soft buzz from the merchants
was all one could hear,
as Maree announced proudly
"It's our 30th Year!"

The sponsors were thanked
the excitement was clear,
With winners t'be announced,
doubtless misty, with tears.

Maree gave the mike
to those illustrious judges,
Attendees grew quiet,
but there were plenty of nudges!

Judge Number 3 said
"This year's been the best,
Your committee is tireless
New South Wales is blessed!

With Judge Number 2, we feel
we've had so much fun,
But the winners can be congratulated
by Judge Number 1"

She stepped to the dais,
Anxious entrants held their gasp,
Would't be their turn this year?
Or those winners from the past!

Two Curlewis Quilters,
their chins all a quiver,
nearly swallowed their dentures,
when announced.....'Collaborative' Winners!

Then, all but one ribbon
had been duly presented,
t'was now 'Best of Show' and
who knows what was expected?

The Show Hall fell quiet,.
everyone pricked up their ears,
Which glorious quilt's win
would cap this 'Pearly' year?

It was the most unexpected
of unexpected happenings,
The 'Best of Show' Rosette
was pinned, to loud clapping....

An 'Art' quilt Trapunto-ed
from two gals whom you know,
with seed pearls encrusted,
has won 'Best of Show' !

Good ol' Merle and Miss Shirl
already be-ribbonned
whispered "it cant be us....
the judge surely, is kidding?"

But Yes! They had Won....
Curlewis' Quilting Queens,
Their entry 'The Pearly Bride'
Hanging central to be seen.

"Magnificent", Maree cheered,
"Now let us once more clap,
such a fabulous Exhibition
from these ladies kiddies, and chaps"

So come to Darling Harbour
and attend THIS year's Quilt Show....
It's a 'Pearler' I tell you,
You've just got to go!

Signature Blocks

Committee members have been delighted by the response shown to the call for
Signature Blocks.
As outlined in The Template (February and May editions), a 30th Anniversary coverlet will be constructed from 1/2 square triangle blocks that have been made by members with their signature on one half.

Plain blocks are also requested so that visitors to The Sydney Quilt Show 2012 can add their names.
A small sample above shows the variety of fabrics being used, with a cream /off white triangle for a visitors signature.
The 'print' half of each block should display current fabric ranges, so as to reflect
'this moment in time'.
Please use a permanent ink pen, or embroidery to add your own name, and also check that the finished size of each block (once sewn into the coverlet) will be 4 inches.

Blocks will need to arrive in The Guild Office before 1 June or be delivered in person to the Guild Desk at The 2012 Sydney Quilt Show.

You are invited to take part in Quilting posterity!

Reminder: Regeneration Exhibition

Have you been to

The 2012 Contemporary Quilt Textile Exhibition : Regeneration
Currently on view at
Manly Art Gallery and Museum

This is a free exhibition that will be on view until 4 June, showcasing the Contemporary Art Quilts being created by members of the NSW Quilters' Guild as well as those from interstate textile artists.

Whilst finished works are highlighted, there will also be the artist's creative journey, for viewers to explore.
One of the delights of this exhibition will be the complementary inclusion of individual display boxes, creating an added visual explanation of the processes and inspiration that each of these textile artists were challenged by.

If you have often wondered "where did they come up with that?" then this holistic display will help viewers see how and why artworks are envisaged in their embryonic form and then created.
Floor talks by some of the exhibiting artists will be held on Sunday 13 May at 3pm and these will further the viewers knowledge of process and product.

Special Exhibition Tours are also being held, scheduled for Sunday 27 May and Sunday 3 June.

This exciting collaboration between The Quilters' Guild Of NSW and Manly Art Gallery and Museum has resulted from the desire to have a specially themed, curated and specific outcome exhibition, creating a challenge for any quilt and textile artist. Those who have been curated in to this exhibition have been working extremely hard to create their best work.

The theme of "Regeneration" is explored with varying fascinating responses, all works excelling in their attention to detail and effect and using a variety of techniques.

This promises to be a visually and intellectually creative adventure for all those who visit!

When : 27 April- 4 June 2012
Venue : Manly Art Gallery and Museum, Cnr West Esplanade and Commonwealth Pde, Manly

This venue is 4 minutes from Manly Wharf and Bus Interchange and close to cafes and shopping.

The Quilter's Guild of NSW and Manly Art Gallery and Museum are once again extremely grateful for, and thank Brother International (Australia) for their ongoing support of this unique exhibition.

'The Pearly Bride' *

No, NOT the title of any of the 2012 Quilt Show Entries ...

Deborah Laurie and her trusty 'Maids Of Honour' have been hard at work collating all the details of this year's 30th Anniversary entries.

All secrets are remaining 'veiled' until 13 June, however, and as with most Volunteer gigs, helping - out is always 'married' with delightful rewards.

Can you volunteer please, at this year's Sydney Quilt Show?
A number of shift times are available, with Thursday,
Friday Afternoon , Saturday and Sunday still requiring Quilters
to 'man the desk and don the gloves'

All assistance will be gratefully received and rewarded with friendship, a Volunteer Quilt Show Badge and a Catalogue.

Thankyou!

* Nothing to stop a few Pearly People turning up at The Exhibition Dinner, however.
