BOQ : Broken Wheel

Broken Wheel : 9 1/2  inch (unfinished) blocks, as seen in the Guild Office this week

This 9 inch block, so easily rotary cut, is the Block of the Quarter and any delivered to the office of The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc by  Tuesday 14 October , or brought to the Annual General Meeting at Burwood on Saturday 18 October, will go into "the winner takes all" draw, at the meeting.
Dont forget to add an identifying name to each block on a scrap of paper. "No name" will mean another block will be drawn, for a member to "win".

Fabric colours need to be red prints set against a white background.
As can be seen, once many blocks are put together, a stunning Red and White quilt is produced, and this could be the beginnings of an entry (for the winner) in the 2015 Challenge : "Red and White"
Scraps dont have to match, therefore there is bound to be plenty of variety available in everyone's stash.
Members are encouraged to make as many as wished.

The block diagram, cutting and piecing directions are in the August 2014 edition of The Template.

October 2014 Friday Showcase

Member's 'Show and Tell'

Small wholecloth : Designed by Keryn Emmerson, Quilted by Jan Foster

Members and friends of The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc are invited to the October Friday Showcase in the Guild's Office to view this quilt and hear Jan Foster's story about the walking foot and freemotion quilting expertise she applied to bring the above wholecloth quilt "alive" with line, pattern and texture.

Jan is another of the guild's volunteers working in conjunction with the committee to deliver interesting events for members. Jan is one of the Friday Showcase team who arrange the ongoing programme of introducing quilters to the guild 's Showcase attendees; quilters who may have a long involvement in the industry or who are experts in their creative field. Almost every month there is a new and exciting story to be heard from the quilters that Jan has arranged to talk about and share their work.

October Friday Showcases however, are an opportunity for all members to have their own "Show and Tell"

Perhaps there is a wholecloth, "flimsy", Applique, Friendship pieced, Antique or even a recent workshop project in your sewing space that other members would enjoy seeing at this meeting.
Please come and share your stories, your quilting journeys and 'show us your quilts'!

Date : Friday October 3
Time : 10am start

All Welcome.

QSG of NSW : September Meeting

This Saturday afternoon the 20th September Ros Moules, the Community Quilts Co-ordinator, will give a talk about the history of the Community Quilts program of the Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc. She will also show us a number of the quilts and quilt tops that the group are currently working on.

We have a new venue for the QSG of NSW talks now at The Glover Cottages on Kent Street in The Rocks area. The cottages were built in the early 1820s and it is a wonderful light filled venue in an historic section of Sydney. It's easy to walk there from both Wynyard and Circular Quay train stations, and is also a short walk along Kent Street from the bus terminal in Argyle Street (catch any bus along George Street with Millers Point as the destination). Don't forget to stop at The Rocks Markets on the way and see what takes your fancy.

Everyone is welcome to attend (Guild members pay $5, non-Guild members pay $10 for entry) and afternoon tea is provided. Bring along any of your quilts for show and tell at the end of the talk. All the details can be found on -

Guild Retreat

. . . 'Show's Over. . . .
. . . Mini Mod's been put to bed  . . . .

. . . . What's next?

The Guild Retreat, of course!

Catherine Porter is another of those Guild Members who quietly go about creating and administering the amazing calendar of events that The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc offer each year.

The Guild Retreat is Catherine's "baby" and as Retreat Co-ordinator she is hoping to meet many more members at this years' weekend away in The Hunter Valley.

Last year's happy quilters at Blackheath still smiling after two and a half days of grinning, chatting and concentrating!

Catherine promises a weekend of comfortable accommodation, shopping, laughing, wining and dining, and....oh yes....quilting!

The venue, The Hunter Valley Hotel Academy is only 2 hours from Sydney, has plenty of room for the quilter who brings a mountain of stash who needs space to create, and professes to offer lovely food, wine tasting and  ground floor access to all rooms.
This will be the room for sewing at Kurri Kurri, sporting plenty of power outlets for the machine enthusiast as well as for those who like to bring extra lighting. Tables will be provided.

What to sew? Well, any of your own personal projects. Maybe now is the time to break the back of the 2015 Red and White Challenge. All members are welcome: beginners, experienced and experts, and when Catherine uses the words "friendly" and "productive" when describing previous retreats, it is obvious that attendees are in for a treat - at this year's retreat!

Details about the weekend can be found on page 10 of the May issue of The Template.
The booking form needs to be filled out promptly and returned with payment to the Guild Office
Retreat Dates : Friday - Sunday 12-14 September 2014

Final Payments are due August 29

ATASDA Textile Exhibition

'Future ...Past' is the Exhibition soon to be mounted by
Australian Textile Arts & Surface Design Association Inc.

ATASDA is and has been a strong and vital textile Association since inception (formally the Batik Association) and celebrates its 40th Ruby Anniversary this year in Sydney with Future . . . Past – a non-juried group exhibition open to all members nationally.

Visitors to the exhibition will see a variety of materials and techniques.
Future . . . Past showcases diversity within the textile art world, including dyeing, felting, weaving, machine embroidery, surface embellishment, discharge, cloth construction, knitting, hand embroidery, printing and more.
Members have created utilitarian, decorative, wearable, two-dimensional or three-dimensional works that are meaningful and definitely audience worthy.
Future . . . Past is an opportunity for members to exhibit as a group – some may never have exhibited their work before – others are known nationally and internationally.

Works are inspired by the member's past – music, a textile, a memory or perhaps an influence of a ‘time’ in their life. Works will be exhibited with an inspirational photo referring to the artist’s Past perhaps inferring the Future. Some exhibition works, objects and wearables will be for sale.
