Day 2 Sydney Quilt Show 2017

Come along to Day 2 of the Sydney Quilt Show 2017 at the International Convention Centre Sydney at Darling Harbour  (Friday 23 June 9am - 4.30pm). Highlights include:

Friendly quilt tutors will be demonstrating all stages of making the top and we encourage visitors to help with the sewing. We also would like younger visitors to help with arranging the blocks on the design wall.

Patterns for two simple blocks, Rail Fence and Disappearing Nine Patch, will be available for a gold coin donation which will go towards batting for the quilts.

2017 Photography Policy

If you are attending the show, you are welcome to photograph the quilts in the show for personal use and to post images online or in social media provided you acknowledge the quiltmaker(s) and, if applicable, the designer of the quilt. It's easy to do - all the details are on the quilt tags! Many quilt labels also include social media details so that you can link to the maker's website, blog, Facebook or Instagram profiles.

If you share images of quilts in social media, help us generate interest in the show by tagging your photos with the hashtags: #sydneyquiltshow, #quiltnsw and #craftandquiltfair.

Sydney Quilt Show 2017 Catalogue

The Sydney Quilt Show 2017 opens on Thursday 22 June at the International Convention Centre Sydney at Darling Harbour from 22-25 June 2017. Opening hour are 9am-4.30pm. The awards ceremony is at 1pm on Thursday. Download Transport & Ticket Information Flyer.

A short-form catalogue will be available at the show. This printed catalogue includes sponsor information; title, size and category information for each quilt entry and a layout diagram, A longer version of the catalogue that includes quilt descriptions and other information is now available.

Sydney Quilt Show Guest Exhibitors: Carolyn Sullivan & Rhonda Pearce

QuiltNSW proudly presents two guest exhibitors at the Sydney Quilt Show 2017- Carolyn Sullivan and Rhonda Pearce.

Carolyn will present an artist floor talk each day during the show from 12noon - 1pm. Hand stitching is what she loves to do. Indian kanthas and the tradition of close, straight stitches have formed the majority of her work, however, she is also interested in finding other ways of stitching that expresses what she sees. She covers large expanses of her own plant dyed cloth with stitching that describes the vastness of the Australian landscape. Follow Carolyn on her textile artist Facebook page.

Rhonda will present her floor talk from 2-3pm on Thursday and then 1-2pm on Friday- Sunday.  The special exhibit includes her award-winning hexagon quilt Insanity that has its very own Insanity Quilt Facebook Group.

Activity Centre at the Sydney Quilt Show 2017

The QuiltNSW Activity Centre will be operating at the Sydney Quilt Show 2017:

• 10.00am – 12noon and 2.00 - 4.00pm Thursday 22 June; and
• 9.00am - 4.00pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 23-25 June.

Come and see how to make a quilt - and get involved if you wish!

We will be making the quilts for Streethearts, an organisation that helps members of the community who are isolated, outcast and disadvantaged.

QuiltNSW Community Quilts
Will be demonstrating their skills in pinning and making quilts which are then donated to appropriate causes and organisations. Community Quilts will be using two BERNINA 720 sewing machines kindly lent to us by BERNINA Australia.

Judging Education Program: Call for Expressions of Interest

Judging for the Sydney Quilt Show 2017 will be carried out over two days and involves a large team of volunteers. If you have been curious about quilt judging and would like to learn more, now is your opportunity.

The QuiltNSW Judging Education Program is calling for expressions of interest from QuiltNSW members for a new intake of participants in 2017-2019. The program commences on 26 September 2017 and is made up of 10 core modules designed to develop knowledge and skills across a range quilt judging, jurying and critiquing scenarios. A commitment fee is payable and you must pledge to attend at least 60% of the sessions including contributing to a group research exercise.

Photography at the Sydney Quilt Show 2017

QuiltNSW has introduced a new photography and social sharing policy for the Sydney Quilt Show 2017 to share the excitement and to honour the the makers. Please respect our members' copyright.

You are welcome to photograph the quilts in the show for personal use and to post images online or in social media provided you acknowledge the quiltmaker(s) and, if applicable, the designer of the quilt.  It's easy to do - all the details are on the quilt tags!

If you share images of quilts in social media, help us generate interest in the show by tagging your photos with the hashtags: #sydneyquiltshow, #quiltnsw and #craftandquiltfair. Try to also find the user name of the maker and designer and tag them too.

Batavia Tapestry on show at the Australian National Maritime Museum

The Australian National Maritime Museum has recently unveiled a stunning new large-scale embroidered work by Melbourne textile artist Melinda Piesse that illustrates the tragic story of the wreck of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) flagship Batavia in 1629.  

The Batavia tapestry is on display in Sydney until 29 October 2017 and is included in the free galleries ticket.

Call for Entries: Art Quilt Australia 2017

Entries are now open for Art Quilt Australia 2017 a juried exhibition of art quilts presented by Ozquilt Network in association with the Queen Victoria Art Gallery and the National Wool Museum. Entries close on 7 June 2017.  Submission is via the online entry form or by postal mail only:

The exhibition will be held at the prestigious  Queen Victoria Art Gallery, Launceston, Tasmania from Friday 7 September to Sunday 22 October 2017 and will be documented in a comprehensive catalogue.

Art Quilt Australia 2017 is a juried exhibition with $6000 in prize money.  All selected entries are automatically eligible for consideration for the $3000 Award of Excellence (non-acquisitive). Entrants submitting complying wool quilts (see below) may also nominate their work for the $3000 Expressions:Wool Quilt Prize where the winning work is acquired by the National Wool Museum for its permanent collection.

Friday Showcase 5 May 2017 - Pamela Brockwell

This Friday 5 May 2017, we welcome the talented Pamela Brockwell to our Friday Showcase.

Pamela Brockwell is currently a member of both Nowra and Canberra Quilters, is self-taught and after 15 years of quilting continues to seek and find new techniques to incorporate in her own designs with hand dyed fabrics. In 2016, Pamela won the Australian National Quilt Award (sponsored by BERNINA) for 2015 with her quilt 'Canzone Rosso' (pictured).

At our showcase, Pamela will be displaying and discussing her work, beginning with her first quilt, through to some of her earlier creations and her show quilts. Pamela has also promised to provide a glimpse of some of her works which did not turn out as she had planned!

QuiltNSW holds Friday Showcase at its office (just behind Town Hall station at 276 Pitt Street, Sydney) on the first Friday of most months and and starts at 10 am. Visitors are most welcome so bring a friend along - $5 for members and $10 for visitors. The full schedule of upcoming showcases is on our website.

Out and about in the Central Coast - Kay Haerland

Moon Magic by Kay Haerland

Starting today, QuiltNSW member Kay Haerland will have an exhibition in the foyer of Erina Gosford City Library.

Kay's work is well known to our members as a former Australian National Quilt Award winner (sponsored by BERNINA) and her delightful mushrooms appear on one our quilt hoop pieces.

The exhibition will run from 2 May until 31 May and contains a variety of large and small new works (many for sale) as well as a selection of Kay's favourite pieces from prior years.

Kay will be at the exhibition most days working with her sewing machine and will be ready to talk to about her work, her teaching DVDs and her approaches to textile art.

Erina Fair is accessible by public transport (train to Gosford Station; bus from the station to Erina Fair Shopping Centre with the bus stop directly outside the library).

Australasian Quilt Convention - Gala Dinner announcements

We are absolutely thrilled to congratulate Jane Gibson and Lynn Hewitt (pictured left to right with Gary Fitz-Roy, MD of Expertise Events) on their success at the Australasian Quilt Convention (AQC) last weekend.

By way of background, Expertise Events runs AQC each April in Melbourne with quilt displays, workshops, lectures, demonstrations, a multitude of shopping opportunities and a gala dinner -- a veritable feast for the passionate quilter. The gala dinner (sponsored by BERNINA Australia) is a chance to catch up with fellow quilters and enjoy some entertainment ... but it is also an awards night celebrating excellence in and contributions to quilting in Australia.

First up, was the announcement of the Australian National Quilt Award winner for 2016 (sponsored by BERNINA Australia) and the winner was Rachelle Denneny with her quilt 'Modern Movement'. Congratulations to Rachelle!!

Next up, Expertise Events recognises Australian quilters with three special awards and I can proudly say that two QuiltNSW nominations won!! The first of these was Jane Gibson, who was awarded the Lut-da Award (along with Marie Lee from Victoria), which is to recognise an outstanding contribution to their community through quilting. Jane has been involved with QuiltNSW for many years and has volunteered in numerous capacities over that time. She has been a source of knowledge and counsel to many committee members and is instrumental in the smooth running of the QuiltNSW administration. Congratulations Jane!!

Then it was the announcement of the Rajah Award winner for 2017. This award acknowledges an outstanding contribution to quilting in Australia and we were all delighted that Lynn Hewitt was announced as the 13th recipient of the Rajah Award. Lynn's contributions have been as quilt teacher, quilt judge, Quilt NSW committee member and volunteer and international quilt tour host. Beyond that, Lynn is a genuine ambassador of quilting, generously sharing her knowledge, encouraging others and celebrating their success. Congratulations Lynn!!

Quilt Study Group 2017: Excursion to Hambledon Cottage, Parramatta

Starting at 11am on the 2^nd of May 2017, the QSG of NSW has arranged for a tour of the textiles and the building at Hambledon Cottage in Hassall Street, Parramatta.  Hambledon Cottage gives you a view of colonial life style and the Exhibition in the Lucas Gallery currently is on the Parramatta Female Factory & some of the women who lived there.

Amongst the textiles that will be on display especially for us are two quilts donated by locals. On seeing the poor condition of their Wood 1865 crazy quilt, a group of Guild and non-Guild quilters decided to get together to replace it with a more appropriate Medallion quilt (now known as the Hambledon Quilt) and Lyn Shayler will tell us how her group put the replacement quilt together.

You must book your place on the tour via the Guild office (9283 3737) so enough Hambledon Cottage volunteers can be organized beforehand to cope with our visit. Please let us know if you have any mobility or other requirements. Payment is $6 per person on entry to the Cottage. Happily both Guild and non-Guild members are welcome on this tour and we have no limit on numbers. We will tour the building in groups of 10 starting at 11am and later view all their textiles up close, including both of the quilts.

Upcoming quilt events in the Blue Mountains and beyond

With the long weekend almost over, our minds are turning to upcoming quilt and textile events. As luck would have it, three such events coincide in late April in the Blue Mountains and further west. A perfect time to gather a few friends, car pool and head out for a day or two ... and with the autumn leaves turning earlier than in Sydney, it's a beautiful time of year to visit.

First up, is Textiles Out of Context. This is an exhibition showcasing contemporary textile artists residing in the Blue Mountains. The show includes weaving, felt works, costume design, dress making and, of course, quilts.

QuiltNSW members Petal Davies and Rachaeldaisy are amongst the 26 artists represented.

The exhibition is on now at Braemar House and Gallery, 104 Macquarie Road, Springwood until 30 April. The Gallery is open from 10 - 4 pm Thursday - Sunday. Entry by gold coin donation.

Next up, is the Springwood Quilt Show.  This is an annual event that runs over the last weekend in April and showcases the work of quilters who live in the Blue Mountains, including a number of QuiltNSW members.

As well as over 150 quilts, there will be a display of Anne Sommerlad's quilts, pop up shops, including Sew Can I and Post Office Patchwork, to name but two, and a cafe serving delicious homemade lunches, refreshments and snacks.

The Springwood Quilt Show is on from Friday 28 April to Sunday 30 April (10 - 4 pm each day) at the Springwood High School Hall, Grose Rd, Faulconbridge. More details available here.

Finally, a little further west beyond the Blue Mountains is Quilts in the Shearing Shed. This is an exhibition of up to 100 quilts from Brigitte Giblin and her students. Having taught in and around Sydney for many years, this promises to be an inspiring show with paper piecing and applique styles sure to be featured.

The quilts will be displayed in a rustic shearing shed at O'Connell, which is about 3 hours drive from Sydney.

Pop up shops run by Cottage Quiltworks in Warriewood and The Home Patch in Bathurst will be there and many handmade items will be available for purchase. The exhibition is on Friday and Saturday 28 and 29 April at 9 Bloom Hill Road, O'Connell. More details available here.

Friday Showcase - Daiva Ceicys

Our next Friday Showcase is 7 April and we are delighted to welcome Daiva Ceicys, who will share her quilting journey.

Daiva is a QuiltNSW Accredited Teacher and tutors in the Far South Coast, sharing skills developed over thirty years with quilters’ groups and patchwork stores in both coastal and more remote country areas. 

Daiva combines modern and traditional techniques in a wide variety of quilts.   

Friday Showcase is held at our office (Level 5, 276 Pitt Street, Sydney) and starts at 10 am. Visitors are most welcome so bring a friend along. $5 for members and $10 for visitors.

Call for Entries: World Quilt Competition 2017

Australian entries for the World Quilt Competition 2017  are now open. Share your artwork on the international stage, and let someone else look after logistics, shipping, customs and insurance!   Entries close on Monday, 15 May 2017. Accepted entries will premiere at World Quilt New England  (17-19 August 2017) and tour to other Mancuso shows in the United States until early 2018.

Entries can be submitted via the Online Entry Form. Alternatively, download, complete and return the World Quilt Competition 2017 Entry Form – Australian Edition (PDF) by e-mail or post. Be aware that your quilt must be at least 1296 square inches (eg 36x36in)  and completed in 2015, 2016 or 2017.  See the Contest Rules for more information.

Quilt Show FAQ: How do I get the photos the right size?

Entries for the Sydney Quilt Show 2017 close at 11.59pm on Monday 13 March 2017. That's only a week away. Please don't leave it to the last minute, jump online and submit your entry today!

QuiltNSW requires a good quality photo showing the entire quilt up to whatever stage it is at - work in progress photos are fine! For the online entry form, the photo must in jpg format and the file size must not exceed 2MB. (The preferred aspect ratio is 10x15cm/4x6in but this is not essential.)

If your camera is set to take high resolution/large photos, it is likely that you will have to resize your photo. 1MB is ideal (say 1200 pixels on the longest side). Most photo-editing programs have resizing functions. In addition, your computer may have built-in tools for resizing images. Here are some tutorial links:

• How to resize an image in Microsoft Paint (Vista, Windows 7/8/10)
• How to resize multiple images in Windows without software
• How to resize photos (For Macs)

Another trick for quick resizing of images is to e-mail them to yourself:

• Resize images in Outlook
• Resize images on iPad/iPhone

Please label your images correctly with your last name, first initial and entry number. For example, for two entries the images would be labelled JonesB1.jpg and JonesB2.jpg. You will need to do this on a computer not a mobile device.

Quilt Study Group 2017: March talk by Sue Shaw

On Saturday the 11th of March the first QSG talk for 2017 will focus on the research and documentation of textiles. Sue Shaw, a social historian who researched military quilts at the Powerhouse Museum for her Masters and co-curated the 2007 ‘From Mothers to Daughters’ quilt exhibition with Dr Annette Gero, will talk first about her recent purchase and subsequent research into this rare Crimean war quilt that was made in Australia.

Among our guests who will also talk about their own research are Jane Gibson, will bring her family’s quilt and workbag made by Millicent Anne Cox that appeared in the recent NGV 'Making the Australian Quilt' exhibition, and Catherine Porter will bring along a pincushion made from military uniforms.

Bring along your own textile items to share their story with us. The Glover Cottages (124 Kent St, Sydney) is a beautiful light-filled venue for the talks and it is an easy and interesting walk via The Rocks or extension to a Barangaroo excursion from either Wynyard or Circular Quay train stations. Entry is $5 for Quilt NSW members and $10 for non-Guild members. Afternoon tea is provided and the talk starts at 2pm.

The Recycled Repurposed Revitalised: Patchwork-Inspired Homeware/Furniture category is a once off challenge to visually enhance the exhibition space at the Sydney Quilt Show 2017 with 3 dimensional objects by using the theme of “recycle, repurpose, revitalised”. Item examples are: no larger than a single chair, free standing, stools, small side table, pedestals, plinth, screens, lamps/stands, foot stools, dining chair, bean bags.

• Entry is only open to financial members of QuiltNSW.
• There is NO entry fee associated with this category.
• Entries to use repurposed furniture decorated with recycled/reloved textiles, patchwork or to create homewares from recycled patchwork blocks and/or unfinished quilts
• The size of the item must be no larger than a single chair AND must be able to be carried by ONE person.
• Judging categories: Best Design, Best Revitalisation, Best Innovation and Viewers Choice (announced on Sunday morning 25 June).
• Items/objects must be delivered by the entrant to the Sydney Quilt Show exhibition space on Wednesday 21 June or by 10.00am on Thursday 22 June.
• Items/objects must be collected by the entrant at the close of the Sydney Quilt Show, i.e. after 4.30 pm on Sunday 25 June.
• All entries must include a good quality 10 x 15cm photograph showing the entire object/item up to whatever stage it is at, at time of entry.
