Sydney Quilt Show 2017 Prize Listing

BERNINA Best of Show prize winner Pamela Brockwell will be attending the Sydney Quilt Show every day sharing insights into the creation of her remarkable quilt Star Link.

Day 2 Sydney Quilt Show 2017

Come along to Day 2 of the Sydney Quilt Show 2017 at the International Convention Centre Sydney at Darling Harbour  (Friday 23 June 9am - 4.30pm). Highlights include:

  • 12noon-1pm floor talk by special exhibitor Carolyn Sullivan
  • 1-2pm floor talk by special exhibitor Rhonda Pearce
  • displays by member groups SYDMODSQUAD  and Chatelaine Quilters 
  • voting on the Recycled, Repurposed, Revitalised homewares category
Be sure to join us in the Activity Centre and help us reach our goal in making 15 quilts for Streethearts:

40 metres of fabric, 336 strips, 864 squares and 736 blocks = 15 quilts in 4 days!

Friendly quilt tutors will be demonstrating all stages of making the top and we encourage visitors to help with the sewing. We also would like younger visitors to help with arranging the blocks on the design wall.

Patterns for two simple blocks, Rail Fence and Disappearing Nine Patch, will be available for a gold coin donation which will go towards batting for the quilts.

Sydney Quilt Show 2017 Prize Winners

Congratulations to Pamela Brockwell who was presented with the BERNINA Best of Show award, Excellence in Domestic Machine Quilting (Professional) Award and 1st Prize in the Combined Pieced & Appliquéd Quilt (Professional) category for her rainhow-hued quilt Star Link*:

2017 Photography Policy

If you are attending the show, you are welcome to photograph the quilts in the show for personal use and to post images online or in social media provided you acknowledge the quiltmaker(s) and, if applicable, the designer of the quilt. It's easy to do - all the details are on the quilt tags! Many quilt labels also include social media details so that you can link to the maker's website, blog, Facebook or Instagram profiles.

QuiltNSW, with support from our principal sponsors Expertise Events and BERNINA, invites you and your friends to experience the colour and excitement of Day 1 of the Sydney Quilt Show 2017 at the International Convention Centre Sydney* (22 June 9am - 4.30pm). Highlights include:

Sydney Quilt Show 2017 Catalogue

The Sydney Quilt Show 2017 opens on Thursday 22 June at the International Convention Centre Sydney at Darling Harbour from 22-25 June 2017. Opening hour are 9am-4.30pm. The awards ceremony is at 1pm on Thursday. Download Transport & Ticket Information Flyer.

A short-form catalogue will be available at the show. This printed catalogue includes sponsor information; title, size and category information for each quilt entry and a layout diagram, A longer version of the catalogue that includes quilt descriptions and other information is now available.

Sydney Quilt Show Guest Exhibitors: Carolyn Sullivan & Rhonda Pearce

QuiltNSW proudly presents two guest exhibitors at the Sydney Quilt Show 2017- Carolyn Sullivan and Rhonda Pearce.

Carolyn will present an artist floor talk each day during the show from 12noon - 1pm. Hand stitching is what she loves to do. Indian kanthas and the tradition of close, straight stitches have formed the majority of her work, however, she is also interested in finding other ways of stitching that expresses what she sees. She covers large expanses of her own plant dyed cloth with stitching that describes the vastness of the Australian landscape. Follow Carolyn on her textile artist Facebook page.


Rhonda will present her floor talk from 2-3pm on Thursday and then 1-2pm on Friday- Sunday.  The special exhibit includes her award-winning hexagon quilt Insanity that has its very own Insanity Quilt Facebook Group.

Activity Centre at the Sydney Quilt Show 2017


The QuiltNSW Activity Centre will be operating at the Sydney Quilt Show 2017:

  • 10.00am – 12noon and 2.00 - 4.00pm Thursday 22 June; and
  • 9.00am - 4.00pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 23-25 June.
Come and see how to make a quilt - and get involved if you wish!

Friendly quilt tutors will be demonstrating all stages of making the top and we encourage visitors to help with the sewing. We also would like younger visitors to help with arranging the blocks on the design wall.

Patterns for two simple blocks, Rail Fence and Disappearing Nine Patch, will be available for a gold coin donation which will go towards batting for the quilts.

We will be making the quilts for Streethearts, an organisation that helps members of the community who are isolated, outcast and disadvantaged.

So come along, get involved, learn the basics of making a quilt and help this wonderful cause. We will be using sewing machines kindly lent to us by BERNINA Australia.


QuiltNSW Community Quilts
Will be demonstrating their skills in pinning and making quilts which are then donated to appropriate causes and organisations. Community Quilts will be using two BERNINA 720 sewing machines kindly lent to us by BERNINA Australia.

Judging Education Program: Call for Expressions of Interest

Judging for the Sydney Quilt Show 2017 will be carried out over two days and involves a large team of volunteers. If you have been curious about quilt judging and would like to learn more, now is your opportunity.

The QuiltNSW Judging Education Program is calling for expressions of interest from QuiltNSW members for a new intake of participants in 2017-2019. The program commences on 26 September 2017 and is made up of 10 core modules designed to develop knowledge and skills across a range quilt judging, jurying and critiquing scenarios. A commitment fee is payable and you must pledge to attend at least 60% of the sessions including contributing to a group research exercise.

QuiltNSW has introduced a new photography and social sharing policy for the Sydney Quilt Show 2017 to share the excitement and to honour the the makers. Please respect our members' copyright.

You are welcome to photograph the quilts in the show for personal use and to post images online or in social media provided you acknowledge the quiltmaker(s) and, if applicable, the designer of the quilt.  It's easy to do - all the details are on the quilt tags!

If you share images of quilts in social media, help us generate interest in the show by tagging your photos with the hashtags: #sydneyquiltshow, #quiltnsw and #craftandquiltfair. Try to also find the user name of the maker and designer and tag them too.

Batavia Tapestry on show at the Australian National Maritime Museum



The Australian National Maritime Museum has recently unveiled a stunning new large-scale embroidered work by Melbourne textile artist Melinda Piesse that illustrates the tragic story of the wreck of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) flagship Batavia in 1629.  




The Batavia tapestry is on display in Sydney until 29 October 2017 and is included in the free galleries ticket.

Call for Entries: Art Quilt Australia 2017

Entries are now open for Art Quilt Australia 2017 a juried exhibition of art quilts presented by Ozquilt Network in association with the Queen Victoria Art Gallery and the National Wool Museum. Entries close on 7 June 2017.  Submission is via the online entry form or by postal mail only:

The exhibition will be held at the prestigious  Queen Victoria Art Gallery, Launceston, Tasmania from Friday 7 September to Sunday 22 October 2017 and will be documented in a comprehensive catalogue.

Art Quilt Australia 2017 is a juried exhibition with $6000 in prize money.  All selected entries are automatically eligible for consideration for the $3000 Award of Excellence (non-acquisitive). Entrants submitting complying wool quilts (see below) may also nominate their work for the $3000 Expressions:Wool Quilt Prize where the winning work is acquired by the National Wool Museum for its permanent collection.

Friday Showcase 5 May 2017 - Pamela Brockwell



This Friday 5 May 2017, we welcome the talented Pamela Brockwell to our Friday Showcase.

Pamela Brockwell is currently a member of both Nowra and Canberra Quilters, is self-taught and after 15 years of quilting continues to seek and find new techniques to incorporate in her own designs with hand dyed fabrics. In 2016, Pamela won the Australian National Quilt Award (sponsored by BERNINA) for 2015 with her quilt 'Canzone Rosso' (pictured).

At our showcase, Pamela will be displaying and discussing her work, beginning with her first quilt, through to some of her earlier creations and her show quilts. Pamela has also promised to provide a glimpse of some of her works which did not turn out as she had planned!

QuiltNSW holds Friday Showcase at its office (just behind Town Hall station at 276 Pitt Street, Sydney) on the first Friday of most months and and starts at 10 am. Visitors are most welcome so bring a friend along - $5 for members and $10 for visitors. The full schedule of upcoming showcases is on our website.

Out and about in the Central Coast - Kay Haerland

Starting today, QuiltNSW member Kay Haerland will have an exhibition in the foyer of Erina Gosford City Library.

Kay's work is well known to our members as a former Australian National Quilt Award winner (sponsored by BERNINA) and her delightful mushrooms appear on one our quilt hoop pieces.

The exhibition will run from 2 May until 31 May and contains a variety of large and small new works (many for sale) as well as a selection of Kay's favourite pieces from prior years.

Kay will be at the exhibition most days working with her sewing machine and will be ready to talk to about her work, her teaching DVDs and her approaches to textile art.

Erina Fair is accessible by public transport (train to Gosford Station; bus from the station to Erina Fair Shopping Centre with the bus stop directly outside the library).
