Pop Up Sewing Day - Wednesday 16 May 2018

QuiltNSW members at a recent Pop Up Sewing Day

Wednesday 16th May has been organised for the next Pop Up Sewing Day with the generous support of Patchwork on Pittwater, Suite 28, 4th Floor, The Gateway Building, 1 Mona Vale Road, Mona Vale. The shop’s owner, Robyn, will open her shop to us for the first time on this day. It’s so important for us quilters to support all of our wonderful patchwork shops, they deliver such an important service to us.

This is a new shop for me over on the opposite side of Sydney from my home. I’m really looking forward to it as I always find that visiting a shop I’m not familiar with opens up a range of exciting new creative possibilities to explore and the travel required is well worth the effort. I know of at least one QuiltNSW member who will be travelling down from the Central Coast for this one, so hop in the car, find out about public transport, or arrange a lift with a friend and visit the northern beaches. I hope you can join me.

Phone the office without delay to secure a place

The Art of Curating: Guest speaker Brenda Gael Smith

If you have ever entered into or attended a juried exhibition, you have probably asked yourself questions such as: what the curator looking for? how did this exhibition come together? how did they hang that work? What happens behind the scenes? How can I improve my chances of selection?

The art of curating brings three distinct imperatives: to select; to organise; and to look after items in an exhibition. Drawing upon more than 12 years’ experience in exhibition administration, including several popular international touring exhibits, independent curator Brenda Gael Smith reflects on the highlights and challenges of these imperatives providing insights and takeaway tips for both artists and exhibition organisers.

In the meantime, enjoy this video about The Quilts of Ken Burns currently on exhibition at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum in Nebraska which also highlights the important role of curators in selecting, presenting and looking after quilts.

Friday Showcase with Cath Babidge - Friday 4 May

Cath Babidge is the presenter for our May Friday Showcase to be held this Friday 4 May.

Cath is a past president of QuiltNSW, has served on the committee and continues to be an active and enthusiastic member of our guild. During her 23 years as a quilter, Cath has graduated from large quilts to smaller projects, where she is more able to satisfy her enjoyment of starting new work with a realistic chance of completion.  Cath describes her own work as 'leaning towards the haphazard’, finding herself easily bored with repetitive styles.  With a hand appliqué piece always on the go and a well stocked ‘One Day’ drawer of hexagons and ‘made fabric’ of random scraps, Cath will be sharing the stories behind her unique variety of quilts.

Friday Showcase is held on the first Friday of most months at our QuiltNSW office, 276 Pitt Street, Sydney, close to Town Hall Station.  Cath’s presentation this Friday, May 4th, starts at 10am, with an entrance fee of $5 for members and $10 for guests.

Quilt Study Group 2018: Talk by Grace Widders on Waggas

The Quilt Study Group of NSW talk on Waggas will take place on the 12th of May at The Glover Cottages, 124 Kent Street in Millers Point. Then along with two of her fellow Hunters Hill Quilters, Doreen and Gil, she will talk about the history of the fundraising project the group has run for many years that focuses on selling completed Waggas and kits from the back room at their quilt show.

There will of course be plenty of their waggas to see and some owners of both new and old Waggas will being theirs along too to show us. If you have made or own any waggas, please bring them along too.

Please encourage everyone you know who is interested in quilting to come along to the Quilt Study Group of NSW talks. The Glover Cottages is a beautiful light-filled venue for the talks and it is an easy walk through The Rocks area from either Wynyard or Circular Quay train stations. Quilt NSW guild members pay $5, non-guild members pay $10. Afternoon tea is provided and the talks start at 2pm. Check the Quilt NSW website or the latest Template Newsletters for more details.

Friday Showcase - Friday April 6

Glenda Wise is the guest presenter for our April Friday Showcase.

Glenda began quilting in 1994.  Already an accomplished dressmaker and maker of soft toys, a series of beginner classes in he mid 90s changed Glenda’s focus to patchwork and quilting and Glenda, in her own words, was “hit by the bug!”

Glenda is a very active member of Illawarra Quilters, having held a multitude of committee positions and devoting much of her time to organising and sewing charity quilts. Her keen interest in entering annual challenges has led to her gathering a treasure trove of special quilts.

A love of learning new techniques and attendance at many classes have allowed Glenda to branch out into many styles of quilting and the quilts she will share with us will demonstrate her skills in both hand and machine piecing, appliqué and quilting.

Friday Showcase is held on the first Friday of most months at our QuiltNSW office, 276 Pitt Street, Sydney, close to Town Hall Station.  Glenda’s presentation this Friday, April 6th, starts at 10am, with an entrance fee of $5 for members and $10 for guests.
