Material Obsession has been a stalwart supporter of The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc. for many years and their Annual Swap Day is eagerly anticipated by many members.

What Does ANZAC Mean to You?

With the 2015 ANZAC Day commemorating 100 years since one of Australia’s most defining times, quilters are invited to create a small quilt for the ‘Lest We Forget Quilt Challenge – 100 years, 100 quilts’.

This is an open challenge meaning all residents of Australia and New Zealand are invited – whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced quilter, young or old – to contribute to this exhibition of small quilts. A quilt entry in this challenge will reflect what ANZAC means to you. 100 pieces will be selected and shown at AQC in Melbourne, April 16 – 19, 2015, and will then tour at selected craft events around Australia and New Zealand.

Although there is no cash prize pool attached to this challenge, commemorating ANZAC has special significance as 2015 remembers servicemen and women from all wars and conflicts over the past 100 years from the ANZAC experience to present day.

Organiser Judy Newman comments: “The spirit of ANZAC and Anzac Day ceremonies have particular relevance in Australia and New Zealand, and with 2015 being our centenary year, commemorations will be as special and touching as ever. I anticipate this quilt journey – for both the quilt makers and those who come to view the finished exhibition – will be a visual reflection of the powerful emotions and memories war brings to our lives.”

CALL FOR ENTRIES

To commemorate one of Australia’s most defining times, we invite you to contribute to the Lest We Forget Quilt Challenge, an exhibition of small quilts.

Create a small work (25cm square) interpreting what ANZAC means to you.

100 quilts will be chosen and hung together as a mosaic, premiering at AQC and then touring at our craft events.

Deadline for online entries is March 6, 2015.

Planning for Red and White 2015

Everywhere we go we hear of people making a red and white quilt to enter in next year’s Sydney Quilt Show. It is very exciting and we are hoping for a fabulous display. If you are one of these people, we would love to hear from you!  Please complete the easy online form below or at this link: Red & White Notice of Intention.

Submitting the form indicates current intention and is not a firm commitment.  Official entries must be submitted by Friday, 13 March 2015.

Remember, to enter a quilt in the Sydney Quilt Show, you must be a member of the Guild for the 2014/2015 financial year ending on 30 June 2015.  Also, if your quilt is commercially machine quilted, your quilter must be a member of the Guild.  Here is the Membership Application Form.

Invite entries for a Contemporary Quilt Exhibition

“Evolution, Change, Challenge - A Contemporary Quilt” 

Saturday 29th August - Tuesday 8th September, 2015

In August and September, 2015, Hazelhurst Regional Gallery & Arts Centre will host a major exhibition of quilts: “Labours of Love. Australian Quilts 1850 – 2015”. Quilts will be sourced from The National Gallery Australia, Canberra, Powerhouse Museum, Sydney and noted quilters and fibre artists from across NSW.

In conjunction with this exhibition, there will be a juried exhibition of contemporary quilts in the adjoining Hazelhurst Community Gallery from 29th August to 8th September, 2015.

The Contemporary Quilt Exhibition will come under the umbrella of The Quilters‘ Guild of NSW Inc. and is open to quilters and fibre artists from all states and territories in Australia. Membership of the Guild is not a requirement of entry. There will be two prizes offered, a First Prize of $1,500 and a Viewer’s Choice Prize of $200.

Judges will carefully consider the appropriate interpretation of the theme and design concepts applied, particularly the use of colour and value for all quilts entered.

10 December update:

Entries must address the title theme Evolution, Change, Challenge: A Contemporary Quilt and measure 70x100cm (WxH) portrait format. Entries via the Online Entry Form only with payment of an entry fee of $25 per quilt. The closing date for entries is 24 July 2015.

Guild General Meeting : 29 November 2014

The final General Meeting of The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc for 2014 will be held in "The Dome" at Burwood RSL on Saturday November 29.

Our Guest Speaker will be Textile Artist Jenny Bain. Her pinterest boards display a deep love of fabric, embroidery and stitch texture and textile collage, thus she is bound to be talking about some visually exciting quilts in her presentation: 

"The Corruption Cycle" 

This exploration  arose out of her background in Sociology/ Anthropology- exploring the nature of power in our society- how ethics are manipulated and how well we as individuals cope. 

Jenny's quilts often use salvage art, historic fibre and handstitching to provoke contemplative thought.

Please bring your own mug to Meetings : Quilt Block Patterns: optional!

This will be the first chance to see the newly elected committee in action, so please come and support these members.

As it is the "Christmas Meeting" please remember to dress in a festive fashion!

Quilt Show at Mandelsons, Goulburn

To coincide with the Hanging of the Quilts in Braidwood, Quilts at Mandelsons is holding its third quilt show.

As in previous years it will be a show with a difference using the magnificent Mandelsons to showcase the quilts. ALL items ( over 100) are for sale. The quilts and textile arts have been made by award winning textile artists Beth Miller, Wilma Cawley and Julie Woods. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own textile art which is now being sought after worldwide. The prices are unbelievable and offer a unique opportunity. All pieces are signed by the artists.

Claire Ayling Bali Batiks will also be selling her fabrics still only costing $15 per metre with some even cheaper.

Notice from ATASDA : Copyright Information Evening

The Australian Textile Arts and Surface Design Association Inc invite interested quilters and textile artists to their upcoming Twilight Series talk.
This will be of special interest to those quilters who are interested in the pursuit of providing provenance to their design process if intending to exhibit, sell or enter Quilt Shows.
All are welcome, however bookings must be made.

ATASDA NSW is delighted to introduce guest presenter, Mr Ian McDonald, as part of our Twilight Series. Ian is a Special Counsel with Simpsons Solicitors in Sydney, specialising in copyright and other entertainment and intellectual property areas of law. Before joining Simpsons, Ian worked for many years at the Australian Copyright Council. He has published widely on copyright and moral rights issues and also lectures at the College of Fine Arts (now UNSW Art + Design) in cultural property, ethics and law. This is an information session suitable for all artists and crafts people who are interested in exhibiting and/or selling their work. It will also be helpful to teacher and students of design, art or textiles. Some of the topics to be discussed include: Copyright Issues arising for artists Using text, poetry, lyrics, etc in artworks Using purchased stencils, stamps or images in collaged or mixed media pieces Using photographs and image transfer techniques in artwork Appropriation, what is and is not considered to be appropriation and when does it become a copyright issue? Responsibility of the artist Responsibility of the organisation hosting an exhibition Using work developed in workshops for exhibition or sale  Intellectual property of tutor workshop content This will be a great talk for all and we hope to see you there.

Living Colour at Grenfell Art Gallery: 25 November - 20 December

The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc. will be holding its 2015 Country Meeting at the Tuncurry Bowling Club on Saturday 21 March 2015 with Guest Speaker Jan Irvine-Nealie. A presentation on "What Judges Are Looking For In An Award Winning Quilt", lunch and Show and Tell also included. Timeless Textiles : Fibre Art Gallery Exhibition by Judy Hooworth

'Detour via The Silk Road' is an exhibition of recent textile works by Judy Hooworth.

This exhibition opens on 20 November 6pm- 8pm and continues until 12 December 2014.

Of the Detour via the Silk Road, Judy Hooworth’s second exhibition, she says:

My new work is influenced by travels in China and Central Asia in 2012  and 2013.
Inspired by embroidery and tile patterns from the region I have connected with artisans from the past, recreating and re interpreting their designs with silk screened mono prints and intensive stitching in my quilts and textile pieces.
