Guild Scholarship

The Guild awards an annual scholarship to provide the opportunity for Guild members to develop their skills and expertise. Multiple awards may be given, up to a total combined value of $5,000 per annum and a maximum of $3000 per project.

Applications for 2012 close on 26 August and successful applicants will be announced at the Guild Annual General Meeting in September 2011. For more information, visit the Guild website.

Country Tutor Workshop Program

The Country Tutor Workshop Program was established for the benefit of country and regional members of the Guild. The program aims to provide access to instruction and ideas to enhance and develop the quilting skills of those members who cannot easily attend the city workshops and showcases.

At the time of application the applicant, ie the group, must have been a Guild member for at least one full year. It is preferable that any workshop participants outside the group are also members but this is not mandatory. After receiving funding for a workshop the group may not apply again for 2 years.

Updated membership information

Membership of the Guild is open to anyone with an interest in patchwork and quilting. Beginners, professional quilters and those that simply admire the craft are equally welcome. By joining the Guild, you obtain access to all membership entitlements for your membership level as set out in detail on the Membership Categories page.

As from 1 July 2011, a joining fee of $15 will apply to all new memberships and lapsed memberships that are not paid by 30 September.

Quilters' Country Luncheon

Braidwood Quilters Inc will be holding their Quilters' Country Luncheon on Wednesday 4 May. The guest speaker will be Dr Annette Gero.

Springwood Community Quilt Show 29 April - 1 May

The sixth annual Springwood Community Quilt Show will be held from Friday 29 April until Sunday 1 May at Springwood High School Hall, off Grose Road at Faulconbridge. There is easy access off the Great Western Highway - turn right at the lights and sign for the Norman Lindsay Gallery.

Local Faulconbridge quilt artist, Petal Davies, has designed a unique pictorial wall hanging as this year's raffle quilt, which depicts the famous Three Sisters at Katoomba.

The show will include displays by two local quilters, Karen Cunningham and Isobel Lancashire. Nine sewing-related businesses will also be trading at the show, so be prepared for some excellent shopping opportunities.

Show hours: Friday 29 and Saturday 30 April 9am-5pm, Sunday 1 May 10am-4pm.

Roslyn Moules receives the Lut-Da Award

Congratulations to Roslyn Moules who was presented with the the Lut-Da Award at the Australasian Quilt Convention last week. The Award goes to a quilter who has made an outstanding contribution to their local or quilting community via the medium of quilting.

For many years, Roslyn has led the Guild's Community Quilts project, in which members meet to sew quilts for people in the community. Each year over a hundred quilts are given to community organisations. Roslyn's commitment to Community Quilts as project co-ordinator has been recognised by this Award.

Kay Haerland wins Australian National Quilt Award

Congratulations to Kay Haerland, whose quilt Under the Canopy won the Australian National Quilt Award, sponsored by Bernina.

The Award is presented to the maker of the quilt that is judged the best from the Best of Show quilts from the annual state guild shows around the country and was presented at the Australasian Quilt Convention in Melbourne last week. Kay's quilt won Best of Show at the 2010 Sydney Quilt Show.

18-20 April: the Guild at the Royal Easter Show

Visiting the Royal Easter Show in Sydney? Look out for quilt making demonstrations by members of the Guild on 18, 19 and 20 April, 9.30am-5.30pm.

Berry Quilt and Craft Show

The Gala Opening night of the Berry Quilt and Craft Show will be held on Friday 29 April 2011, between 7.30pm and 10pm.

The Quilt and Craft Show will display 150 quilts and there will be stalls and a cafe.

The show will be open on Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1 May 2011 at the School of Arts, Alexandra Street, Berry (on the NSW South Coast). Opening hours are 9.30am- 4pm.

There is a $5 entry fee for adults and free entry for children. All welcome!

QSG Report: Japanese Textiles-Then and Now

Our guest speaker was Lynn Hewitt who is a past President & long time member of the Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc. Lynn has been visiting Japan since 2002, when she and Jane Gibson were invited by the city of Nagoya to represent Sydney and the Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc at the International Quilt Fair. Since that first visit Lynn has been back 5 times, including twice as the tour leader for quilting tours. Apart from her own visits, Lynn's original interest began through her daughter, who learned Japanese and went there on a school exchange - thus beginning a series of return visits firstly by school children and then followed later by adults, a number of whom have become good friends with Lynn and her husband Ted.

 Lynn began her talk with a PowerPoint presentation showing a map of Japan to highlight the various areas where textiles are produced. As she progressed through the talk, Lynn described the different textile types and their production. She also explained the origin of the Kamon crest which we are so used to seeing in quilts today and how Sashiko was used to patch and mend garments. (A fireman’s outfit was made of many layers stitched together and when needed was doused with water to protect him from the fires). 

After discussing design elements of Japanese textiles and how, for instance, different plants symbolise the different seasons ( Spring - plum and cherry blossom, Summer- iris & a flowing stream, Autumn-chrysanthemum and Winter - bamboo leaves), Lynn went on to tell us about Yuzen dyeing. She explained how it is done, how it can take up to 4 months for the design to be transferred, and the different elements painted - hence the high price to be paid for many of the beautiful Kimonos we see (that is unless you are lucky to get to a second hand market or a quilt show, where a number of people from the audience later told us they has picked them up for a song).  Lynn then spoke about how the indigo dye was produced and how some cloths are dyed up to 150 times to get the pattern and colour desired. She showed us examples of the different Shibori dyeing techniques as well as some images of amazing quilts made using indigo fabrics

After her very informative talk Lynn showed many examples of the textiles she had described earlier. She then went on to show some of the quilts she has made using her Japanese fabric. Some of it was most unusual, one piece purported to be woven banana leaf, but she couldn’t actually confirm this as her Japanese didn't stretch that far. But it was an interesting piece to see!

 Following Lynn’s talk and her showcase there was a great ‘Show and Tell’ from the audience ranging from amazing fabrics picked up in the backstreets, kimono and yukata garments, and of course lovely quilts made from Japanese fabrics.

 

 

 

Jacaranda City Quilters of Grafton Challenge

The Jacaranda City Quilters of Grafton invite entries for their Exhibition Challenge, with the theme of A Song Title.

There are four categories for the Challenge:
Section A - A4 size (21cm x 30cm)
Section B - maximum size one metre
Section C - over one metre
Section D - Youth (age 16 and under. The quilt may be any size.)

Each entry may be quilting category Q (quilted by the owner) or P (professionally quilted).

Entries may also be made to Section E - these quilts are for exhibit only and do not have to be related to a song title.

Quilt Show at the Cathedral, Goulburn: 12 & 13 March 2011

12 March Quilt Study Group meeting

The Quilt Study Group of NSW is a Guild sub-committee, which exists to promote interest and research into quilting, particularly in Australia. Members are committed to the study of quilts past and present with this study encompassing the social and historical context in which the quilts were made as well as designs, techniques and materials used in both vintage and contemporary quilts.

The first meeting for 2011 will be held on 12 March, when Lynn Hewitt will share her collection and knowledge of Japanese textiles and tell of the influence contemporary Japanese cottons have had on her quilts and clothing. Lynn has made many visits to Japan, enhancing her collection of Japanese textiles each trip. Bring your antique Japanese textiles for show and tell and, of course, those wonderful quilts made with Japanese quiting fabrics.

Venue: The Ambassador Room, Burwood RSL, 96 Shaftsbury Avenue, Burwood.
Time: 2.00 – 4.30 pm.

This is a free event for Guild members. Non-Guild members are also welcome ($15.00 per visit).

Casterton Kelpie Association Quilting Challenge 2011

The Casterton Kelpie Association Quilting Challenge in 2011 is to make a quilt no bigger than one metre square on the theme 'A little bit country'. Entries based on traditional or art/textile styles are welcome.

Australian Quilts in Public Places (AQIPP) is an initiative of The Australian Quilters Association Inc. Entries are invited for the 2011 exhibition, which will have a theme of Forest Threads.
