Friday Showcase - 3 May 2019 with Maree Gebhardt

This Friday 3 May, we welcome QuiltNSW Life Member, Maree Gebhardt, to our Friday Showcase to share her quilting journey.

In Maree's words, the day will be:

"... I will be walking along my quilting journey.  Starting in 1981 when I took my first patchwork lesson, my involvement with both the Quilters Guild of SA and QuiltNSW, quilts I have made to celebrate happy and sad events in my life and my love of hand quilting and wholecloth quilts."

Maree hasn't said it, but the morning is not to be missed ... over a 38 year period, Maree has perfected the art and craft of patchwork with meticulous applique and tiny, perfect hand quilting just the start.

Appropriate for a past President who very capably led QuiltNSW driving appropriate changes, Friday Showcase is on the move this month. Always a popular event, Friday Showcase has become standing room only for more than a few months so we’ve decided to trial a new venue – right next door to the guild office!

How will this work?

The guild office will open at 9 am for members and visitors wishing to drop their bags, library books, community quilts to the office, have a cup of tea or coffee and a homemade treat.
Doors to the meeting room at Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts (SMSA) will open at 9.30 am and our small charge ($5 members/$10 visitors) will be payable at the door.
The showcase will start at 10 am at Level 1, SMSA.
The office will be closed while the showcase is underway and will then reopen at the conclusion of the showcase for the changeover of the quilts hanging, morning tea and usual activities.

Please show your support for this trial by coming along this Friday 3 May.

Quilt Study Group Tour of The Opera Centre on 27th May

The Quilt Study Group has arranged a guided tour for Quilt NSW Guild members to The Opera Centre – Surry Hills, Sydney on Monday the 27th of May. Because there is a limit of 20 people, please ring the Guild office before Friday the 24th of May to reserve your place. The cost is $20 per person, payable on the day to the Opera Centre.

The Opera Centre is where the costumes and sets for Opera Australia are made and stored and we will see the vast production workshops and rehearsal studios. People from many disciplines (milliners, wig makers, cobblers, costumiers, designers, carpenters, model makers, and scenic artists) work to stage the operas and we will see examples of their work.
Participants must have a good level of fitness for this walking tour. It includes many stairs and there are no passenger elevators.
The address is –
The Opera Centre
480 Elizabeth Street
Surry Hills NSW 2010
The Opera Centre is a 10-minute walk from Central Station (take the Chalmers Street exit). Please assemble at the Tour Meeting Point 15 minutes prior to your scheduled tour start time of 10am. The tours take approximately 90 minutes.

Volunteer at the Sydney Quilt Show 2019!

To showcase our beautiful quilts, and to keep your quilts safe, we need your help. Please consider giving a couple of hours of your time to being surrounded by our wonderful quilts while being a tour guide to our visitors. We need lots of people to make up our happy team and you do not need to enter a quilt in the show to volunteer.

If you have entered a quilt in the Show, it is a requirement that you volunteer for at least two shifts during the exhibition.

As a thank you, a Volunteer Quilt Show badge will be yours as a reminder of this fantastic event. Unfortunately, QuiltNSW cannot supply Craft & Quilt Fair tickets for our volunteers.
