The 2019 Suitcase Challenge From These Curtains was exhibited for the first time at the Craft Alive event in Newcastle, NSW from 11-13 March 2022 and will continue on tour across Australia in 2022. Look out for a Craft Alive event near you. Book a ticket!

By way of background, QuiltNSW had a wonderful sewing day at NSW Government House. The Governor Mr David Hurley and Mrs Linda Hurley visited the group during the day and were very interested in our individual projects and quilts. QuiltNSW was later approached to see if we would be interested in recycling some curtains from Government House. This became the basis of the suitcase challenge.

Our Environment: 2020 Suitcase Challenge

A highlight of yesterday’s annual general meeting was the premiere of the 2020 Suitcase Challenge Our Environment. Each quilt is 40cm x 40cm. Congratulations to the prize winners. First prize is a BERNINA sewing machine supported by BERNINA Australia.

•  SECOND PRIZE + VIEWERS CHOICE (tied): Mulga Burning by Linden Lancaster 
• THIRD PRIZE + VIEWERS CHOICE (tied): Landlines by Jill Rumble

The judges were Lisa Walton, Rhonda Langhorne and Barbara Gower.  Viewers' Choice was determined via an online poll that was open to all current QuiltNSW members to vote in.

Suitcase Challenge 2020: Vote for Your Viewers' Choice!

There are 31 entries for the 2020 QuiltNSW Suitcase Challenge Our Environment. 

An online poll has been set up to enable current QuiltNSW members to vote for the Viewers’ Choice virtually rather than attending the Annual General Meeting in person.

Select your viewers’ choice and then submit. The poll closes at 8pm on Thursday 18 February. 

The results will be collated and announced at the Annual General Meeting on Saturday 20 February. It will be followed by an online gallery which will include details of the makers of each quilt.

Day 4: Sydney Quilt Show 2016

QuiltNSW welcomes you to day 4 of the Sydney Quilt Show 2016.  Saturday's program includes:

• displays by QuiltNSW member groups Sydney Modern Quilt Guild and Arcardian Quilters
• 10am-12 noon: Meet the Teachers -Therese Rankmore  (Creative Cutting) and Pam Furniss (Machine Applique and Quilt as you Go)
• 10-11am final floor talk by special exhibitor Caroline Sharkey 
• 11-12noon floor talk by special exhibitor Merelyn Pearce
• 12noon-1pm join BERNINA Best of Show prize winner Rachaeldaisy for her final day at the show

QuiltNSW Colour Collision Challenge:
What Colour Makes Brown,Try a Colour Collision by Megan Manwaring

Kid Skills: 10am-12 noon and 1.00-3.00pm

A free activity, operating Saturday& Sunday. Introducing children to the delights of colour, fabric and block designs. This year there is the opportunity for kids to try sewing on a BERNINA machine, Simply Red 215. Any patches sewn together will be made into a quilt for a children’s charity.

$5,500 IN PRIZE MONEY TO BE WON!

The theme is 'Tradition with a Twist' and if selected as a finalist your quilt will tour Australia and New Zealand across the year. A prize pool of $5,500 is up for grabs with winners awarded on interpretation of theme, excellence in design and craftsmanship.

First prize: $3,500

Viewers Choice: $500

A Textile Art Mini Challenge.

We invite you to show your best friend in their best light, in a textile art and mini challenge.

This pet portrait could include those with paws and whiskers, or other features such as fins and feathers, but the animal feature must be a pet, not a wild animal or zoo animal.

Traditional and contemporary works using creative textile techniques, including patchwork, embroidery, applique, surface design, photo transfer, printing etc. will be considered.

Finalists will be displayed at AQC and Craft & Quilt Fairs across the year.

The winner will receive a fabulous Fiskars prize pack worth more than $200.

The work must have at least 2 layers and the size is 25cm square.

If you have completed a kaleidoscope  and would like to be part of the AQC Quilt Show, send information and an image of your quilt for consideration. This is a non-judged exhibition. Our aim is to create a spectacular display of millefiore colour. Your quilt can be any size and does not need to be an original design.

Online submissions close February 25, 2016.

Your quilt does not need to be finished for online entry, but if selected for display it must be completed and sent to Expertise Events before March 25, 2016.

Under 35's Challenge : 2015

The theme for all young quilters planning to enter this year's Brother Under 35's Quilt Competition is : 

"My State"

The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc. is delighted to once again be part of this wonderful opportunity for children, young adults and those under 35 to showcase their textile talents.

Prizes are going to be very desirable, and the many supporters and sponsors of this competition are to be congratulated for promoting Quilt involvement amongst youth.

Your entry can be obtained from the Guild Office (between 10am and 3pm weekdays).

No need to dress as Santa Claus . . .

. . . . however . .
The Committee of The Quilters Guild of NSW Inc invite all members to wear Red and White attire this Saturday at the AGM.

The whole day will be a Red and White theme, as interest mounts for the

  2015 Red and White Challenge.

This fabulous quilt is instantly recognised as one fitting into the requirements of next year's Challenge, but are those fabrics really "red"?

Peruse the following fabric samples and identify the red ones:

Made your Choice?

Actually, there is only one Red (with white or cream) fabric in the 30 examples above.

Every other fabric includes pinks, oranges, greens, yellows, blues and/or black.

Some inclusions are obvious and the fabric will never "read" as red, others, from a distance aren't so easily discerned.

Members are invited to bring their fabrics to the AGM. 

Once held up to the audience from afar, it will become more obvious which examples will fit into the following guidelines:

"Red and White - Check it Out"  White can be off-white, to cream. A wide range of reds will be accepted.

"If in Doubt - Leave it Out"  If you want to use a print with other colours it should still read as red. So if you're in doubt, leave it out.

Suitcase Challenge 2014

Dont despair!

Many a quilt has been produced in far less time than currently available for entry into this years'  Suitcase Challenge.

In three and a half weeks the 40cm x 40cm Mini Modern quilts being collected in the Guild Office will 'disappear' for judging.

Will yours be there?

For those who are wont to leave it "down to the wire" there is still time to peruse these books in the Guild Library for inspiration.

Pearl Challenge on view

St Vincent's Hospital is once again supportingThe Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc with their display of one of the 'travelling suitcases' Challenge Quilts.

Currently on view in the first floor corridor between the Public and Private hospitals is the 2012 Pearl Challenge.

Due to Display Case constraints, some of the heavily encrusted quilts have been unable to be included at this venue.
These quilts can be seen by the public until January 10, 2014.
