BOQ : Hourglass

Erica Spinks (BOQ Co-ordinator) has put together a very easy block pattern for members this quarter, and with Sydney Quilt Show Entries probably 'done and dusted' this stress free block could be  attended to with one's eyes shut!

The Hour Glass block is an extremely common name for a number of quilt blocks, and this month's BOQ is a variation of the Hour Glass, sometimes referred to as Buck-eye Beauty, or, simplified Jacobs Ladder.
In fact there are more than 16 names, historically, that have been attributed to the Hour Glass block, extremely simple to both cut and construct.
Full details of colours and prints required and cutting information can be found on page 29 of the February 2015 edition of 'The Template'

Completed blocks may be brought to the Burwood Meeting on Saturday 16th May, 2015, or posted to reach the Guild Office by Tuesday 12th May

BOQ : Mosaic

If you have some  free time this summer, why not get in early and construct a Mosaic Block or two for the February General Meeting?

This 8 inch block (finished) has a very popular name. In fact there are more than 40 block designs with the name "Mosaic". It really refers to a block that has a centre square, which becomes built up to a larger square with the addition of triangles or other shapes.

Erica Spinks, our BOQ Co-ordinator has asked for turquoise and purple fabrics combined with white-on-white to produce this easily rotary cut, dramatic block.
It's not all that difficult to construct : no "Y" seams, as it is diagonal rows that are sewn to each other.
What a great scrap quilt it will be for the "winner takes all" at the Feb Meeting.
Full instructions can be found on page 37 of the November 2014 Template.

If making more than one block please remember to label each block with your name/address (eg do not pin 4 blocks together with one label, as this causes extra work for the Meeting Co-ordinator copying them out at the last minute to go into the "draw")

BOQ : Broken Wheel

Broken Wheel : 9 1/2  inch (unfinished) blocks, as seen in the Guild Office this week

This 9 inch block, so easily rotary cut, is the Block of the Quarter and any delivered to the office of The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc by  Tuesday 14 October , or brought to the Annual General Meeting at Burwood on Saturday 18 October, will go into "the winner takes all" draw, at the meeting.
Dont forget to add an identifying name to each block on a scrap of paper. "No name" will mean another block will be drawn, for a member to "win".

Fabric colours need to be red prints set against a white background.
As can be seen, once many blocks are put together, a stunning Red and White quilt is produced, and this could be the beginnings of an entry (for the winner) in the 2015 Challenge : "Red and White"
Scraps dont have to match, therefore there is bound to be plenty of variety available in everyone's stash.
Members are encouraged to make as many as wished.

The block diagram, cutting and piecing directions are in the August 2014 edition of The Template.

Fabric colours need to be one light yellow and a variety of pinks. The block diagram, cutting and piecing directions are in the May 2014 edition of The Template.

Guild member Erica Spinks  is the volunteer who is responsible for creating the design and publication of this regular activity. Erika is one of many "behind the scenes" volunteers who offer their expertise and commitment to the varied facets of administering our large organisation.
Thankyou Erica!

Block of the Quarter

Who doesn't love a Blue and White Scrap Quilt?
The next Block of the Quarter is a 10 inch - Irish Chain

Folk lore may be correct in asserting that Irish immigrants brought this design to the America colonies; the design becoming popular with pioneer quilters across the country.  An 'Irish chain' was a surveyors instrument, slightly larger than 10 inches. Another theory is that the pattern is an adaption of an old weaving structure. Historian Barbara Brackman states that the earliest recording of a quilt in this design is 1814.
Whatever its History, this block structure is easy for beginners as well as providing excellent blank spaces for decorative quilting.

Page 25 of February 2013 Template has the instructions for this easily rotary cut block, utilising off white with varying blue fabrics.
So, raid your stash please (who wouldn't love a new but traditional Blue and White quilt for their home), construct a block or two, and bring them to the Burwood meeting on Saturday 18 May, or post them to reach the Guild Office by 14 May.

Remember, "Winner takes all" and the drawing of the prize always provides much delight at Guild Meetings.

Winner Takes All!

Block of the Quarter : Nelson's Victory

As illustrated on page 27 of The Template November 2012 this block uses pale pink, hot pink and yellow prints. It is an 8 inch block (finished) that is simple to rotary cut and chain piece.

There is still time to raid your stash and find swatches of these fabrics, construct a block or two, attach your name (on paper) on the back and then bring them to the February meeting at Burwood RSL on Saturday 23 February.
The Meeting Hostess is in charge of collecting blocks, with one lucky block maker winning all.
If you are unable to attend the meeting, then please think of posting them to the Guild Office to arrive before Tuesday 19 February.

Turquoise, Purple and Cream....

This is the fabulous colour combination for the current  "Block of the Quarter"

Directions to make the traditional, scrap delight, 8 inch block "Louisiana" can be found in the August edition of The Template (page 41)
The block is composed of rectangles and the Flying Geese patchwork unit, needing turquoise and purple prints, and a cream solid.
Many blocks will make an extremely striking quilt top!

As always "winner takes all" when they are part of the draw at the Burwood meeting of The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc.
Block pieces can be easily rotary-cut and need to measure 8 1/2 inches (unfinished)
Please send in a block or two to be in the draw.

Self named blocks need to reach the Guild Office by Tuesday 9 October for the AGM the following weekend.
At the Guild's August meeting, Wailyn Mar, Template Editor, very deservedly "won" all of the red, black and white "Spool" blocks ... enough for quite a large quilt top.

There is time still to raid the stash and whip up a Louisiana block this weekend!

Block of The Quarter

The Template : May 2012, Page 36 includes instructions for the current Block of The Quarter

This is the very effective Spool block and, constructed as a 6 inch block with high contrast black-on-white print fabric plus red print fabric, will deliver a very dramatic quilt top for the lucky winner.

There is still time before Tuesday August 14 to send your self named blocks to the Guild Office if you cant attend the Burwood Guild meeting on August 18, where the winner of the draw will win all blocks submitted.

A great way to delve into your stash, producing blocks for a traditional masculine-looking quilt top (in time for Christmas!)

Block of the Quarter

The Template : February 2012, page 25 includes instructions for the current Block of The Quarter

An easy way to use up that stash of Batiks and construct an effective small block (6 inches)

If you can't come to the Burwood General Meeting on Saturday 19 May, then please think about posting some of these blocks, to reach the Guild Office by Tues 15 May.

There are a number of enjoyable activities scheduled for the Burwood meeting, so please, can you add to the fun, by donating a few of these simple blocks....(no curves!)

The lonely little petunias (above) are currently in The Guild Office and would love some fabric friends to join them!

Block of the Quarter

Participating in the Block of the Quarter drawn at the August Guild meeting at Burwood couldn't be simpler - if you win just three sets, you'll have enough blocks for a lovely Japanese bag. All instructions are in the June issue of The Template.

Above you will see examples of the blocks (you have to make one of each ninepatch to make a set for entering the draw) and below an example of the layout of six blocks which forms the basis of the bag (shown here flat).

You'll notice that each block is composed of nine different fabrics - not two. The variety is part of the final bag's charm, so please do follow this requirement. You can use the same nine fabrics for each block (although the more the merrier - maybe it's time to do some swapping with quilter friends?), but please do have nine per block, to play fair with other participants.

At the Guild committee meeting this evening, I spotted some blocks that had already come in (you can bring them to Burwood on 18 August or post them to reach the Guild offices by 14 August). They looked yummy! Don't miss out on this BOQ, which was suggested by a Guild member (thank you!). Please feel free to send your BOQ suggestions to the Template Editor via email or snail mail.
