Your Guide to the Sydney Quilt Show 2015

The exhibition catalogue is available for sale for $2 (free to exhibitors) and is a handy guide to the Sydney Quilt Show 2015.  Inside you will find:

• prize details of the Super Quilt Raffle including the Lunar Blooms made by Pat and Helen Godden as featured on the catalogue cover. Tickets $2 each;
• contact details for all of the generous quilt show sponsors;
• a comprehensive listing of the awards and prizes;
• profiles of the Sydney Quilt Show judges Rachelle Denneny, Cathy Jack Coupland and Maree Gebhardt;
• quilt descriptions for all 441 quilts entered into the exhibition; 
• an index of exhibitors and a layout diagram;
• a list of commercial quilters who are members of the Guild and whose work features in the exhibition;

Meet Best of Show Prize Winner Karen Terrens

Talking of experts, you have to opportunity to meet with Bernina Best of Show Prize Winner Karen Terrens in the Best of Show area from 11 am - 12 then again 1.30  - 2.30pm on Friday 19 June and Saturday 20 June.  All welcome!

Cathy Jack Coupland Demonstration Report

Guild attendees at last weekend's year end General Meeting were treated to a Thread Painting Demonstration by member Cathy Jack Coupland.

Cathy very generously shared the many tips and tricks that she has formulated over  the years whilst producing through freestyle machine embroidery, ever increasingly exquisite and perceptive Fibre Art.

Moving beyond sheer pattern decoration and shape and colour relationship exercise, Cathy's philosophy of 'Sense of Place and Belonging' is being explored in increasingly personal works. Inspiration evolves from varying sources and with a commitment to excellence, Cathy devotes many hours to the perfection of her design work prior to the commencement of final works.

The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc is blessed to have a Fibre Artist of Cathy's calibre within their midst, and on Saturday presented her with a well earned Teaching Certificate.

Cathy is an accredited Teacher of Special Techniques.

Teacher Accreditation Information Day: 8 May 2010

Do you teach Patchwork and Quilting? Are you interested in becoming an accredited teacher with The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc?
Come and join the members of the Teacher Accreditation sub-committee and some accredited teachers at the Guild office on Saturday 8th May 2010.
This is an excellent opportunity to find out more about the process of becoming an accredited teacher, to ask questions and to share any concerns you may have about the program in an informal gathering.
Time: 10am to 4pm. A sandwich lunch will be provided. Cost $10. Bookings are essential.

Curved piecing by machine.A traditional block given a new technique. Learn how to rotary cut pieces using templates provided, and sew them quickly on the sewing machine. Try dark and light, positive and negative or just scrappy light and dark fabrics. The plan for one day is to make a 9 block quilt, but you may prefer to make a larger quilt later. 1 June Friday Showcase: Deborah Louie

Talented machine quilter and Guild accredited teacher, Deborah Louie, is the presenter of the Friday Showcase this Friday, 1 June 2007 (10am at the Guild office). Deborah was awarded the Home Domestic Machine Quilting prizes at Quilt Show 2005 and Quilt Show 2006. Look out for her entry in 2007!

Member Semi-Finalists at Paducah

Congratulations to Guild members Belinda Betts and Ann Visman from Orange who have each had quilts accepted as semi-finalists for further judging at the 2007 AQS Show in Paducah, Kentucky in April.

Belinda's Floral Star of 2006 was made when her husband was undergoing chemo and radiation therapy last year, and has been quilted with all her favourite feather designs:



Definitely Floored by Ann Visman was also machine quilted by Belinda. The design was inspired by a photo of a parquetry floor, and Ann's exquisite designing and patching skills have resulted in this beauty. It has radiating lines, feathers and heavy background fillers as the quilting designs.



Ann is a Guild-accredited patchwork teacher and is available for teaching anywhere in Australia. You can e-mail Ann for further information.

Position Vacant - Teacher Accreditation Coordinator

The Guild seeks a a new co-ordinator for the Teacher Accreditation Subcommittee. Key tasks are:

1. Hold and maintain the records of the subcommittee. Maintain confidentiality of all information seen as part of the subcommittee involvement unless permission has been granted for disclosure. This must be documented for protection of both The Quilters’ Guild of NSW Inc and the applicant, as well as the subcommittee members.
2. Arrange and attend monthly meetings of the subcommittee.
3. Record the minutes of subcommittee meetings, type up the minutes and distribute copies to subcommittee members.
4. Receive applications for Teacher Accreditation, check that all requirements are received.
5. Organise assessment of applicants’ Stage 1 and Stage 2 work by at least two accredited teachers, and arrange the final interview as required. Type up assessment reports and critiques and distribute copies appropriately.
6. Hold master copies of all subcommittee internal paperwork and provide as necessary.
7. Complete the Progress Report, updating the records as applicant progresses through Stages 1 to 3.
8. Hold and update a list of teachers accredited by The Quilters’ Guild of NSW Inc.
9. Liaise with the members of the subcommittee as required.
10. Keep record of recipients of Stage 1 leaflet and paper work.
11. Organise advisers (an accredited teacher from the list) for applicants who have successfully completed Stage 1, and assessors for the written stage 2 course outline. applicants who have successfully completed Stage 1, and assessors for the written Stage 2 course outline.

Guild Teacher Accreditation Program

Teacher accreditation is a valuable service provided by the Guild. This is not a training program, but rather recognition of proven skills of present and future teachers. The Guild now offers three programs of teaching accreditation to Guild members:

• Program A - this is the full three-stage program for those people considering teaching, or relatively new to teaching traditional patchwork and quilting. Participants need to demonstrate broad knowledge and good technical skills in the basics of drafting, template making, piecing and applique, quilting and finishing methods. (Application fee $60);

• Program B - this is a fast tracking version of the above program for teachers of traditional quiltmaking and is available to those who have established careers as teachers and those holding accreditation from an interstate Guild. (Application fee $30); and

• Program C - this program is for those teachers who specialise in various advanced techniques used in innovative, art or traditional quiltmaking, without ever teaching the basics of patchwork and quilting. Of course, the work demonstrated should still demonstrate a broad knowledge of basic techniques in assembly and finishing. (Application fee $30.) Award winning quilt artist Kay Haerland was recently accredited under Program C.
  

On successful completion of either Program A or Program B, the applicant will be awarded Accredited Teacher of Patchwork & Quilting. Those completing Program C will be awarded Accredited Teacher - Special Techniques.
