Quilt Show FAQ: How do I get the photos the right size?

Entries for the Sydney Quilt Show 2017 close at 11.59pm on Monday 13 March 2017. That's only a week away. Please don't leave it to the last minute, jump online and submit your entry today!

QuiltNSW requires a good quality photo showing the entire quilt up to whatever stage it is at - work in progress photos are fine! For the online entry form, the photo must in jpg format and the file size must not exceed 2MB. (The preferred aspect ratio is 10x15cm/4x6in but this is not essential.)

If your camera is set to take high resolution/large photos, it is likely that you will have to resize your photo. 1MB is ideal (say 1200 pixels on the longest side). Most photo-editing programs have resizing functions. In addition, your computer may have built-in tools for resizing images. Here are some tutorial links:
Another trick for quick resizing of images is to e-mail them to yourself:
Please label your images correctly with your last name, first initial and entry number. For example, for two entries the images would be labelled JonesB1.jpg and JonesB2.jpg. You will need to do this on a computer not a mobile device.

See the Guide to the Online Entry Form for answers to other FAQs. Please direct any other queries to:
The exhibition team looks forward to receiving your entry!

Quilt Study Group 2017: March talk by Sue Shaw

On Saturday the 11th of March the first QSG talk for 2017 will focus on the research and documentation of textiles. Sue Shaw, a social historian who researched military quilts at the Powerhouse Museum for her Masters and co-curated the 2007 ‘From Mothers to Daughters’ quilt exhibition with Dr Annette Gero, will talk first about her recent purchase and subsequent research into this rare Crimean war quilt that was made in Australia.

Among our guests who will also talk about their own research are Jane Gibson, will bring her family’s quilt and workbag made by Millicent Anne Cox that appeared in the recent NGV 'Making the Australian Quilt' exhibition, and Catherine Porter will bring along a pincushion made from military uniforms.
Bring along your own textile items to share their story with us. The Glover Cottages (124 Kent St, Sydney) is a beautiful light-filled venue for the talks and it is an easy and interesting walk via The Rocks or extension to a Barangaroo excursion from either Wynyard or Circular Quay train stations. Entry is $5 for Quilt NSW members and $10 for non-Guild members. Afternoon tea is provided and the talk starts at 2pm.

Two Person Quilts: Sydney Quilt Show 2017

Two-person quilts are welcome at the Sydney Quilt Show 2017 in the following categories:

  • Category 5: Entrant's Quilt Top Quilted by Another (Amateur quilt top maker)
  • Category 10: Entrant's Quilt Top Quilted by Another (Professional quilt top maker)
  • Category 16: Two Person Collaborative Quilt (Open)

Entrant's Quilt Top Quilted by Another

If you enter Category 5 or 10, Entrant’s QuiltTop Quilted by Another, the quilter must be a member of QuiltNSW for the quilt to be accepted or eligible for a prize so now is a really good time to check and confirm the membership status of your quilter. For judging purposes, the main focus will be on the quilt top and the prize is awarded to the entrant (quilt top maker), with the quilter being acknowledged.

Categories 5 and 10 are for quilts where any quilting is done by another person, whether or not payment is received. The quilting may have been done by hand, domestic sewing machine, frame- mounted machine, long-arm machine or computer aided stitching. The services of the same quilter may be used by more than one entrant in these categories. As reported in the November newsletter, entries for categories 5 and 10 are not eligible for Best of Show and the Conditions of Entry have been updated to reflect this.

Two Person Collaborative Quilt

This trial open category is specifically for two-person collaborative quilts. Any kind of collaboration is eligible for this category including, for example:
  • where both people work together on every stage in the creation of the quilt;
  • where one person makes the quilt top and has creative input in the design of the quilting by another person;
  • quilts made from orphan blocks or antique tops where the original maker is not known; or
  • where a person completed a quilt started by a maker who has died or is no longer quilting.
A quilt entered in this category will count as one of the two entries allowed for each of the entrants. Both collaborators must be current QuiltNSW members, unless the second person has died or cannot be identified. For judging purposes, the entire quilt will be considered.  The prize will be awarded to both entrants together to share as they see fit.

Quilts in the Two-Person Collaborative Quilts category are eligible for the Excellence in Quilting awards and other special and sponsor awards but not the new Best Contemporary Quilt and Retaining the Tradition:Best Traditional Quilt awards where there needs to be an individual maker.
