Sydney Quilt Show 2016 Prize Winners

Whizz Bang! Congratulations to Rachaeldaisy of the Blue Mountains who was presented with the BERNINA Best of Show award and first prize in the Mixed Techniques-Anything Goes category for her colourful creation.  In her own words:

My exploration of folded point blocks such as Pine Burr, Somerset Star, Pointed Star and an old Chinese folk quilt have resulted in a sampler that is a whizz bang explosion of colour, form and fun!

Sydney Quilt Show 2016 Opens Today!

QuiltNSW invites you to experience the colour and excitement of Day 1 of the Sydney Quilt Show 2016 at Glebe Island (22 June 9am - 4.30pm). Highlights include:

Plan Your Visit to the Sydney Quilt Show

The quilts are in. Judging day is over. Set up is currently under way at Glebe Island (see the video below) and the Sydney Quilt Show 2016 opens tomorrow! Here are some tips to help you plan your visit.

Getting There

QuiltNSW welcomes you at the Sydney Quilt Show 22-26 June 2016: daily from 9am-4.30pm.

The show is at the Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island 41 James Craig Road, Rozelle. Transport options include:

• FREE ferries from Darling Harbour (10 minutes) and Circular Quay (30 minute trip)
• FREE buses from Central Station (25 minute trip)
• DRIVE, TAXI or PRIVATE CAR. Park before 10am and save.
• PEDESTRIANS walking from public transport points can catch the FREE shuttle bus.

ALERT: If you are travelling by train on the Illawarra / South Coast lines, there will be trackwork on those lines on Saturday and Sunday, 25 and 26 June 2016.

Awards Ceremony: 1pm Wednesday

The awards ceremony is at the new time of 1pm on Wednesday 22 June 2016. A comprehensive online gallery of prize winning quilts will be posted on the QuiltNSW website soon after that. The results will also be shared on QuiltNSW Facebook page and Instagram.

In the meantime, you can download a copy of the Sydney Quilt Show Catalogue (1.8MB PDF).Find out where your quilt will be hanging, read about the special exhibits, look up the timetable for the Meet the Teacher demonstrations and more.

An abridged version of the catalogue is available at the show. If you have entered a quilt, you can collect your copy from the volunteer sign in desk. Remember to wear your exhibitor ribbon and/or membership badge.

Quilt Show Photography Policy

And don't forget to pack your camera or smartphone! You are welcome to take as many photos as you like of the exhibition for your own personal use. Posting your photos online is fine too so long as you have obtained consent from the quilt maker and include attribution. Please respect the copyright of our members. We look forward to a stream of colour, excitement and quilts on Instagram at #sydneyquiltshow.

Pop up Sewing Day Patchwork Plus Miranda

Our next Pop Up Sewing Day will be held at Patchwork Plus Miranda on Thursday 19th May 2016 from 10am.

Lorraine Downey is the owner of this well established quilt shop and she has kindly offered to host this Pop Up Sewing Day.

The shop has a wide variety of fabrics including reproduction, batiks, orientals, and brights.

Those who love to paper piece are also catered to with a variety of shapes in quality paper to choose from. Come along and have some fun with like minded quilters and investigate all that Lorraine has to offer in her well stocked quilting shop.

Facebook & Instagram - How to maximise publicity for your next quilt show

11-am  :  Sue Miller will address the members with a Power Point Demonstration on the use and access of Social Media as pertinent to QuiltNSW. 

                 Come and find out how to add facebook or Instagram to your smart phone, so that access to all the news at the Sydney Quilt Show and other activities, are at your finger tips. 

                Sue will take the mystery out of "hashtags" and show how simple it is to add images of your own quilts to social media, and view events as they are happening. 

                Country Members, who often feel isolated,  will be grateful to retrieve this kind of information, and moving forward it will be the way of the future for many communications from QuiltNSW

                Sharing your work is not as scary as you think! Sue is willing to help "one-on-one" after the Demonstration, if necessary.

- Hands on demonstration – Setup Facebook and Instagram, Security, Tips and Tricks

- Bring along your mobile device - laptop, smart mobile phone, Tablet

- Remember to also bring along your apple id and password and any other passwords you may need to set things up / make changes.

- Save time. Download the Facebook and Instagram apps from the app store at home (mobile or tablet). But don’t worry, we will do this together as well.

- if you don’t have data on your device this is not a problem – I will show you how to connect to the free WIFI service at the Burwood RSL.

- Q & A – if you have any hot questions re social media – make note of them and there will be time to ask.

Tula Pink presented by the Quilt and Craft Fair

 

We are excited to announce Tula Pink will be our very special guest artist on three days of the Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair in June, and will hold three special presentations during the fair! Tula who? Tula Pink is a USA-based illustrator, fabric designer, quilter, author, maker and generally good person who enjoys talking about herself. Her signature designs have been adapted to fabrics, woven ribbons, paper products, needlepoint kits, embroidery patterns and sewing machines and can be found in independent fabric shops and retailers all over the world. Tula is most recognised in her industries for her dark sense of humour, a flair for hiding animals in the strangest of places (artistically, not literally) and her boldly unique use of colour and pattern. Tula comes from the 'more is more' school of design where there is never enough space and always room for that one last thing. Join us for an AMAZING presentation On three days of the fair, Tula will be holding an entertaining presentation and trunk show. Hear about the journey of her inspiration and design process which has led to her amazing success worldwide. For as long as Wendy  can remember, there have been fabrics and threads around her. From a very early age she has cut, shaped, sewn and created toys, clothes and any number of items that could be constructed from the materials she had at hand. Wendy is relatively new to patchwork and quilting, compared to many. Training as a tertiary sewing teacher has given Wendy a broad skills base in design and construction enabling her to advance her piecing and quilting skills quickly, gaining several quilting awards.
In Wendy's  classes there is an emphasis on a fun and relaxed atmosphere conducive to a positive learning experience. Wendy gets great joy from seeing people achieve skills they thought far beyond their capabilities. She enjoys designing quilts, preferring modern styles, being heavily influenced by historic quilters such as the Amish and Gee's Bend Quilters. Many other traditional styles also inspire her modern designs. All of her quilts are machine pieced and quilted using a multitude of techniques. Wendy currently lives in the beautiful Port Stephens region and this also has a strong influence on the quilt designs she creates.

The Springwood Community Quilt Show

The Springwood Community Quilt Show

The 2016 Springwood Community Quilt Show is looking to being the best yet with over 150 quilts of all styles made by the talented quilters of the Blue Mountains region. In addition to the impressive display of quilts there will be traders tables selling a variety of quilt related items, fabric, quilt patterns, quality handmade goods and vintage sewing treasures.

Chris Jurd is this year's featured quilter. Chris is a renowned quilter and very popular teacher not just in the Blue Mountains but also Sydney and Australia. There will be a special exhibit of her many quilts and she will be on hand during the show to talk to and answer any questions about her quilts. The raffle quilt is an award winning design called 'Lots of Dots' by Chris Jurd and was made by the dedicated members of the committee who all contributed to the sewing. The quilting was then completed by Susie Anderson of Leura Quilting. The show raises money for the Blue Mountains Rural Fire Service and the Springwood High School. Last year the money collected through raffle sales helped raise the $10,000 that was donated to Blue Mountains RFS.

There is a cafe on site run by volunteers serving delicious morning and afternoon teas and light lunches. The tasty soups, homemade cakes and freshly baked scones are always popular choices.

The show is held Springwood High School, Grose St, Faulconbridge. Friday 22nd- Sun 24th April. Open from 10am - 4pm each day. There is plenty of parking and wheelchair access.

Shining Light Award Winner 2016

Taught to sew by her mother, at a very young age. Junior QuiltNSW member, Sofia Locke has enjoyed her creativity ever since. She now has an impressive number of awards for her quilts.

Sofia is a creative and talented young quiltmaker, a real Shinning Light. We were proud to nominate Sofia for the Shining Light Award, an Expertise Events Award that is presented to a talented young quilter each year at the prestigious Australasian Quilt Convention’s Gala Dinner. We are thrilled that Sofia was selected for the award this year. Congratulations Sofia.

Quilt Study Group 2016: April talk by Rhonda Pearce

On Saturday the 30th of April Rhonda Pearce, who owned Post Office Patchwork at Glenbrook for many years, will give a talk for the Quilt Study Group of NSW. 

Rhonda has made and designed many award-winning quilts, including the famous “Insanity Quilt” exhibited at the 2007 Sydney Quilt Show, and “Baltimore Classic” which won 1^st prize in the traditional appliqué section at Houston in 2013. We will hear how she designed them, the steps involved and details of the particular techniques she used.

The talk will be held at 2pm on Saturday the 30^th April 2016 in The Meeting Room at The Glover Cottages, 124 Kent Street in Millers Point. Entry is $5 for Guild members and $10 for non-Guild members. Afternoon tea is provided.

Red & White at AQC

At the Sydney Quilt Show 2015, QuiltNSW held a special themed Red & White exhibit and created a spectacular display. A selection of these red and white quilts will be on display at the Australasian Quilt Convention 14-17 April 2016. You can also view all of the red and white quilts from 2015 online in the Red & White Online Gallery.

Shibori Boro Art with Alan Tremain

QuiltNSW member Alan Tremain's 'Shibori Boro Art' exhibition features boro inspired indigo dyed textiles, in conjunction with Nicola Coady's 'Reflections of Japan' designer pottery.

Alan has designed and created an exhibition of original textiles which includes layered bed cloths, interior décor textiles and limited fashion accessories.

Nicola's designer pottery reflects concepts created through her influences of Japanese culture and custom.
