Quilt Study Group 2015: November Talk by Lisa Walton

Lisa Walton will give the final Quilt Study Group of NSW talk of the year on Saturday the 21st of November 2015. Lisa has been awarded many prizes for her quilts in Australia and international quilt shows and also teaches across Australia, New Zealand, the USA, UK, Europe and South Africa. She was awarded the 2010 Jewel Pearce Patterson Scholarship for Quilting Teachers by the International Quilt Association, Houston USA.

Lisa's talk is called “Leap and the net will appear - Sometimes great opportunities occur but we are afraid to take that leap due to natural fear of rejection or humiliation”. Lisa will talk about how taking that leap often leads to even more exciting opportunities.

The QSG of NSW talks are easy to get to and are a short walk from either Wynyard or Circular Quay Train Stations. They are held at The Glover Cottages meeting room, 124 Kent Street, Sydney on a Saturday afternoon and start at 2pm. Entry is $5 for Guild members, $10 for others, and afternoon tea is provided.

Monday, 19 October 2015

Moving forward ……we are now ready.

Following the article “Moving Forward…..Is The Guild ready?  written by outgoing President, Linda Butcher and placed in the August 2015 issue of The Template, we have received only positive comments.

This was reflected in the overwhelmingly affirmative vote when members were asked to pass the motion to adopt our new operating name at the AGM.

The management committee is committed to help our organisation to flourish and move forward into the future with a fresh new image. We are looking forward to increased membership, the development of new programs, more younger quilters amongst the membership and new methods of communication taking us into the 21st century.

The new name is short, easy to say and it honours the tradition of our Guild while looking to the future.
While we will be known in the future as “Quilt NSW” (the spoken version of this is “Quilt New South Wales”), we will still retain our official registered business name of “The Quilters’ Guild of NSW Inc.

Please note the logo/name as shown above is a non-professional draft copy only. A streamlined new one has been commissioned.

The change over will take a while to complete, so please adopt “Quilt NSW” as our new name straight away and you will notice the new name alongside the existing logo starting to appear over the coming months.

Pop Up Sewing Day: UNSW Randwick Campus: 21 October 2015

Join students and staff from the UNSW Design Department for this exciting day of creativity.

With our help, Mel will also be introducing UNSW students to the art of patchwork and quilting, so we need lots of keen sewers there to get the students interested. We’re hoping to start a whole new quilting revolution at UNSW.

Four new sewing machines will be available for use on the day* (or BYO machine.) Hand sewers are also welcome. Morning tea will be provided by UNSW and there are numerous food outlets on campus for lunch.

Carrickmacross Embroidery Workshop: September 2015

There are a small number of places left in this workshop being held by renowned UK embroiderer Nicola Jarvis at the Embroiderer's Guild. Nicola is from the Royal School of Needlework and has designed this piece specially for this workshop. It is completely unique and has been worked nowhere else.

You will learn the techniques of Carrickmacross lace from someone who worked on the Carrickmacross style lace on the Kate Middleton wedding dress. As there is some preparation to do before the workshop, now is the time to make your decision to enrol in this workshop as there are a couple of places available.

Carrickmacross Kookaburras - A Carrickmacross Lace Workshop with Nicola Jarvis

           Dates: Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September 2015 10.00 am to 3.30pm
           Cost: Embroiderers' Guild Members - $215.00, Non-members $260.00
           Closing Date: 28th August 2015

Students will work a contemporary Australian design in traditional Irish White Work technique. The Kookaburra and Eucalypt flowers and leaves will be depicted by couching a variety of linen threads on silk organza and net. The lawn will be cut away to reveal this charming decorative motif. The design will be further embellished with filling stitches, pops and guipure. Further embellishment with pearl beads and iridescent sequins is optional (these images are of the preliminary drawings).

For enrolment details contact Susan Freeman at The Embroiderers' Guild on 02 9743 2501 or see Nicola Jarvis Carrickmacross Workshop 2015

Friday Showcase: 4 September 2015: Pam Furniss

Pam Furniss is a Guild accredited teacher who now specialises in teaching hand and machine appliqued Quilt as you Sew techniques in her classes. She has taught in Australia and New Zealand, and many of her quilts have been published in quilting magazines and won prizes at the Sydney and Victorian Quilt Shows. Pam's website is Pam Furniss: Quilt Designer & Tutor

The pleasure of teaching is what inspires most of the quilts I make today.  My aim is always to provide a relaxed and enjoyable learning environment, encouraging confidence and creativity in the students in the classes I teach. I believe that if they are taught properly how to master a skill, the students too will share my view, “It’s easy”.

Building on and exploring the initial design is what gives me pleasure in the creative process. I have a great love for design and with the many visual inspirations leading me into the next projects, my love of patchwork and quilting will always endure.

We welcome everyone to the Friday Showcase so please come along to see Pam's wonderful quilts and hear her talk.
