Novocastrian Quilters invite you to a performance by Cathy Miller
Cathy is a Canadian singer, songwriter and quilter who will amuse you with her many songs, stories and quilt trunk show.
Her first CD " One Stitch at a Time" resulted from a trip to Australia in 1999, viewing The Rajah Quilt, and then seeking out further Australian quilt stories that became music material for this talented lady.
A gig at a Jinny Beyer retreat led to more songs being composed, further CD's and a Travelling Show that has seen her perform in USA, Canada, Europe, NZ and Australia.
This weekend's performance will be Cathy's only NSW show and is sure to delight.

Be inspired by the theme to create a quilt no larger than 120 cm X 150 cm (portrait or landscape orientation).

I was inspired by Chinese symbolism for wealth, good luck and prosperity, the Imperial Dragon (Long) and the Phoenix (Fong).

The 30th annual members' exhibition of The Quilters' Guild of NSW Inc opens tomorrow, Wednesday 13 June at 9am at Darling Harbour. The awards ceremony commences at 11am and everyone is welcome to come along. Thank you to all of the Sydney Quilt Show 2012 Sponsors. Their generosity and support are much appreciated. The quilters were finished,
their fingers, quite numb,
Judges had judged
and quilts were now hung.
A soft buzz from the merchants
was all one could hear,
as Maree announced proudly
"It's our 30th Year!"
The sponsors were thanked
the excitement was clear,
With winners t'be announced,
doubtless misty, with tears.
Maree gave the mike
to those illustrious judges,
Attendees grew quiet,
but there were plenty of nudges!
Judge Number 3 said
"This year's been the best,
Your committee is tireless
New South Wales is blessed!
With Judge Number 2, we feel
we've had so much fun,
But the winners can be congratulated
by Judge Number 1"
She stepped to the dais,
Anxious entrants held their gasp,
Would't be their turn this year?
Or those winners from the past!
Two Curlewis Quilters,
their chins all a quiver,
nearly swallowed their dentures,
when announced.....'Collaborative' Winners!
Then, all but one ribbon
had been duly presented,
t'was now 'Best of Show' and
who knows what was expected?
The Show Hall fell quiet,.
everyone pricked up their ears,
Which glorious quilt's win
would cap this 'Pearly' year?
It was the most unexpected
of unexpected happenings,
The 'Best of Show' Rosette
was pinned, to loud clapping....
An 'Art' quilt Trapunto-ed
from two gals whom you know,
with seed pearls encrusted,
has won 'Best of Show' !
Good ol' Merle and Miss Shirl
already be-ribbonned
whispered "it cant be us....
the judge surely, is kidding?"
But Yes! They had Won....
Curlewis' Quilting Queens,
Their entry 'The Pearly Bride'
Hanging central to be seen.
"Magnificent", Maree cheered,
"Now let us once more clap,
such a fabulous Exhibition
from these ladies kiddies, and chaps"
So come to Darling Harbour

In two weeks time the Judging of this year's Sydney Quilt Show entries will be 'done and dusted' and volunteers will be busy in the Darling Harbour Exhibition Centre displaying the more than 360 quilts entered.
Its not too late to send in your completed Volunteer Form or contact The Guild Office to be added to the list of volunteers needed for the five exhibition days of this year's Quilt Show. A rotating list 'White Glove' Volunteers are needed so that all volunteers remain able and enthusiastic to carry out these varied tasks :
If you have an entry in this year's quilt show have you been in contact
with your "Drop off Lady"?
Quilts must be delivered to your contact person by Wednesday, 6 June.
Don't forget to check now that your quilt is correctly labelled and has a hanging sleeve/velcro strip (as applicable).
Please ensure that there aren't any forgotten pins or needles still poking through.
Have you purchased your entry tickets to this year's exhibition at Darling Harbour?
If not, there are still a few days left to contact The Guild Office to purchase tickets at a reduced rate.
Quilt groups might like to organise a bulk order for their members.

The next Sewing in the Office event for Community Quilts is on Monday 28 May 10.30 - 2pm
Once again the talented Guild quilters who sew tirelessly for this worthy cause invite you to share a few hours with them, hand appliqueing and piecing donated fabrics into special quilts for needy children.
Please bring along your favourite sewing kit and either your own lunch, or visit the welcoming cafe downstairs.
The 'cuppa' and friendly chat are free!

Committee members have been delighted by the response shown to the call for
Signature Blocks.
As outlined in The Template (February and May editions), a 30th Anniversary coverlet will be constructed from 1/2 square triangle blocks that have been made by members with their signature on one half.

Judy Hooworth, the 2012 winner of the Rajah Award, will give an illustrated talk about the history of quilt art in Australia from her perspective: and specifically how her own work developed and evolved and continues to evolve today.
Judy will look at how The New Quilt has changed and how it has influenced her work and the work of fellow artists.

The seventh annual Springwood Community Quilt Show will be held from Friday 27 April until Sunday 29 April at Springwood High School.
The next Sewing in the Office event for Community Quilts is on Monday 23 April 10.30-2pm
Regeneration: Contemporary Quilt Textiles 2012 will be open free to the public from 27 April to 4 June 2012 at the Manly Art Gallery & Museum at West Esplanade Reserve, Manly. All are invited to the opening by the curator, Jennifer Sanders, at 6-8pm, Friday 27 April 2012.
The exhibition showcases some of the best work to be seen in the art quilt world. It will be an opportunity, not only see the finished artwork, but in most cases, to also see the processes used by the artists to achieve their vision and response to the theme ‘Regeneration’, via individual display boxes. This will include the artists’ sources of inspiration, photos, sketches, samples of fabrics and techniques.

Many Guild Members will remember a fellow quilter, Kay, and all are invited to an Exhibition of her Quilts entitled:
The Fairholme Quilters' Quilt Show is being held again next weekend.
Did your Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, other relative or friend teach you her sewing skills?
Perhaps you remember a certain wonderful wise mantra of theirs, or maybe the advice of an early Quilting Teacher still rings in your head, each time you sit down to create.
"Use Your Empty Time"....this gem of information, written in a 1991 Lady's Circle Patchwork Quilts, still resonates.
It referred to having a "pick up and go bag" of pre-prepared handwork, thus turning those Dr's Waiting Room periods into patchwork time. Then there are the hours that soon add up for Mum's at School Gates. There's also travelling time: work / holiday or visiting, and even at home "Empty Time" can be found, with snatches of productive moments being grabbed between other duties.
Using lengthier home quilting periods to prepare fabric and blocks, cutting out, threading needles, and updating the Grab Bag, will pay off ....... as you race out the door.
To celebrate The Guild's 30th Anniversary, a collection of wise words, hints and tips that you've discovered have been helpful on your quilting journey, will be collated and published.

We'd love to know your "Pearls"!
Willoughby Council has recently upgraded their premises in Chatswood, allowing the Arts and Cultural Manager, Jacky Talbot, to showcase The Bicentennial Banners; textiles that were designed and created in 1988.
There are 14 visually stunning Banners, celebrating the History of Willoughby from its indigenous Guringai roots, through to the diverse community present in 1988.
Judy has devised a guided tour of these banners, recently extensively conserved by The International Conservation Service.
NSW Quilters' Guild members will once again delight in viewing the hard work of one of our long time members.
Textile Artist Yvonne Line led an industrious team of volunteers throughout two years of dedication to bring to textural life, the vibrant designs of Malcolm King.
These Bicentennial Banners are a supporting addition to the National Trust's Heritage Festival 14-26 April 2012.
The banners are on view permanently, however the Information Tour is scheduled only on Tuesday 24 April. Please book for this tour, to hear the history of The Bicentennial Banners and how restoration was undertaken.
Jacky Talbot would be delighted to hear from any of the original volunteers, or their families, who worked on this installation.

Once again The Guild will have a presence at Sydney's Royal Easter Show.
Want to take your stitching in a new direction? Then sign up for this workshop with the extremely accomplished CAROLYN SULLIVAN
Carolyn, a Life Member of the Guild, author and embroiderer, will guide us through two days of decorative 'kantha' style stitching.
This technique has become a feature of her beautiful quilts, with its roots being found in the traditional stitched cloth from Indian and surrounding sub-continent cultures.
Using leaves as a theme basis, workshop participants will learn the techniques of direct and transfer, printing and stamping. Traditional floral decorative embroidery patterns will be sourced as inspiration for a sampler, and Carolyn will assist students in exploring both traditional and contemporary avenues for their work.
